On March 10 1979 Judge Milton A Elconin dismissed the Shafter Police Department court calendar about 14 cases including hit and run and drunk driving. Dedication of Shafter sign at Green Hotel on James Street
A large crowd gathered Friday March 21 for the dedication of a historic marker sign at the Green Hotel on James Street. Shafter leaders spoke including Mayor Elmer Unruh and Chamber President Mary Siemens, with Debbie Mitchell unveiling the sign. The Shafter High School Band performed, and the 4 H club donated 50 dollars to the Historical Society, challenging others to match. Tenneco West contributed 2500 dollars for Santa Fe Depot renovations. A prior Historical Society meeting planned a pot luck dinner April 18 at the Veterans Hall with Kern County Historian Frank Latta as guest. Membership exceeds 300, and donations are sought to fund depot work by October 11.
