Shafter Candidates Forum Highlights Eight Seek City Seats
About 100 residents attended the Chamber of Commerce Forum at Shafter Veterans Hall. Seven of eight candidates spoke while Johnny Thomas was absent due to a Father-Daughter banquet. Candidates Med Garcia Louis Florez Don Little George Wise Freeman Nixon Joe Kirk Loyd Link answered questions as moderator Dick Larson timed five minute remarks before written queries. City Council race for April 8 will fill three seats with polling places at the Mexican Baptist Church and Congregational Church.

The Shafter Potato and Cotton Festival Committee unveils new events while retaining favorites. May 9 7:30 p.m. Junior Miss Pageant at Shafter High School Auditorium. May 10 10 a.m. Festival Parade with line up on South Shafter Avenue. Noon barbecue at Stringham Park and craft booths. Antiques car parade and Model T potato race on Sunday May 11 at Shafter High School stadium. Carnival runs May 8–11 at G.P.O.D. lot with reduced tickets from Legion.

Shafter Senior Qualifies for State Speech Finals in Improv
Carolyn Novak of Shafter High becomes the district’s first student to reach the state interscholastic Speech Tournament. She placed seventh in the valley’s State Qualifying in Clovis while advancing in Impromptu without a coach. The San Jose finals run May 2 to 4 with nationals for the top five.
