The New York regatta reported Columbia as winner over Shamrock in a taxing race under variable wind. Light air slowed progress but Columbia held a late lead, finishing narrowly ahead as conditions shifted, with final times and margins noted amid changing breeze.
The Columbia defeats Shamrock by 41 seconds after a drifting close finish as wind shifts favor the American boat. Capt. Barr fouled and tacked Shamrock’s wind to secure the win at the line amid a luffing start and near gale conditions off Jersey.
Reports from Scotland indicate Edward is very ill with rheumatic fever while the king remains at his bedside. Doctors have expressed concern over the seriousness of the condition and the lack of a formal official bulletin increases public anxiety.

In Judge Kmmory's court yesterday the Budlong divorce dispute went to the jury this morning. The case pits George Budlong’s ex-wife and his current wife against him over possession of the house and lot. The former Mrs Budlong says the property was awarded to her in the divorce with a rent of 14.60 monthly, while Budlong contends 18.59 monthly payments were unrelated to the lease and he deeded the property to his present wife.
At a special board of education meeting the principal salary structure was updated. Previously principals in schools with eight to twenty rooms earned 149 dollars monthly. New rules set eight to twelve rooms at 140, 11 to 16 rooms at 140, 16 to 20 rooms at 150, and more than 20 rooms at 160 dollars per month.
Thomas Bexton, jailed as a suspected locomotive fireman, died in the city jail last night. An officer arrested him yesterday morning. police plan an autopsy by the coroner tomorrow. Papers on his person indicate he lived in Parsons, Kansas. A relative may be sought.
North Yakima Washington October 4 crowds at the state fair broke records with 1000 turned away yesterday afternoon as Mount Hood won the 2:29 trotting event earning a $100 purse. Pierce County led county exhibits with Yakima second and Clarke third in overall standings.
The Automatic Telephone Co. reports bogus collectors have been taking rents without authority. Patrons are urged to notify the police if any collector appears, as the company warns.
The plumbers board of examiners met at Western avenue and Wall street last night and examined 21 journeymen plumbers. Another session is planned at the same location on Monday night.

Damon’s residence on 910 Fifth Avenue.
The third steamer of the Globe line the Eureka cleared from San Francisco for this port today. She will load a cargo from Seattle for Honolulu.
Ed Briggs who posed as a naval purchasing agent and was convicted for obtaining money under false pretenses was denied a new trial by Judge Emory. The state case against Mabel Keating on larceny from the person continues before Judge Griffin.
