The Columbia defeated Shamrock in a dramatic America's Cup race with a final winning time by 1 minute 27 seconds plus handicap. Crowds cheered as the American boat crossed the line at 2 15 05 while Shamrock finished at 9 16 82, amid lively sea breeze and high tension.
Testimony during the Schley trial highlighted Admiral Schley's composure under fire. Lieut Doyle described the Brooklyn’s actions in June and July bombardments including chasing the Colon, while Doyle admitted a log error corrected after Commander Sharp pointed it out.

Donald McKeracher, a teller at the Seattle National Bank, was bound over to the federal grand jury after a preliminary hearing before United States Commissioner Keifer. He admitted taking 2100 of a 5000 deposit by J W McCreary, claiming the rest was spent on drink and women.
Mr. Andrews learned the young man led a fant life and McCreary testified he deposited 4000 with McKeracher on June 15. McCreary went to Nome June 1 and returned Aug 21. The bank had found a shortage of 912,700 and McKeracher was blamed. McKeracher and his father attended the hearing with Attorney Moe Cafferty as Deputy Cushman led the prosecution.
The municipal civil service commission announced that no examinations will be held this month due to inadequate appropriations by the city council. The service lacks eligibles, forcing several departments to hire more temporary workers.
Money paying gambling machines have appeared in several saloons. Four illegal devices are stored at police HQ. One was taken from Bradley-Shaw store on Firat avenue. Two more were seized from Henry Heck’s saloon. A third was confiscated at Manse Lewin’s on First avenue south. Detectives Philbrick and Hubbard recovered them. Complaints will be filed against operators and the test case will set the date likely for a ruling.
At a Chamber of Commerce meeting Joseph Shippen urged a resolution calling submarine electric communication from Puget Sound to Alaska, the Philippines, and Asiatic centers. The proposal argues the route shortens distance to Japan versus San Francisco and could attract promoters to make Seattle the terminus.
Tonight and Friday in Seattle and vicinity expect cloudy skies with threatening weather and probable showers. Winds shift from fresh southeasterly to northerly as the system passes.
John Yturns, a 40 year old fisherman from Seattle, was found dead in his boat on the Duwamish River near Black River junction at about 9:30 last night. Coroner Hoye was notified and will investigate. Authorities believe heart failure caused the death and that Yturns had fished the Pow area for many years.
The Seattle Electric Co surveys routes to Fort Lawton linking via government road or bay line. A county franchise is sought before construction begins to serve soldiers and bayside communities with reliable transport and potential new homes along the route.
Trial of Dickinson youth and two Van Buren boys for disorder at the Grand Opera House resumes. Witnesses for the defense claim officer Leighton used force after resistance. some witnesses describe a chaotic scene with handcuffs and scuffles in the gallery. Proceedings adjourned at noon with rest to resume at 2:15 PM.
Indiana Senator Beveridge completed a six month voyage to Russia, China, Japan, Manchuria and the Philippines aboard the Japanese liner Kaus. He advocated Pacific Northwest reliance on Orient markets and predicted the canal will boost US trade with Asia while warning about keeping ports open. He met Marquis Ito in Tokio and declined a Chamber of Commerce visit to review the proposed ship canal route.
At the Episcopal convention in San Francisco the morning session focused on reading reports, with some referred to committees. The Woman's Auxiliary began its triennial convention at Grace Church with religious ceremonies and a sermon by Bishop Nichols. The afternoon session held a business meeting.
The steamship Queen Capt. Lloyd will leave for Nome on October 10 in what is described as the final Nome sailing from this port. Other ships like the Banta Ana and Roanoke face winter plans or repairs, while several vessels are on their last Nome trips and cargoes rush to meet winter needs.
