Local Group Buys Hotel Tract on East Parkway
A syndicate of twenty Scarsdale men represented by Diedrich B. Gristede purchased from Equity Scarsdale Corporation the eight acre site at East Parkway Crane Road Spencer Place and Chase Road where excavation for a 2 million hotel had begun. The deal closed Wednesday night with Frederick Fox and Company handling both sides. The buyers, all Scarsdale residents, plan to develop the tract preserving and improving the village business area with possible hotel features. Exact consideration not disclosed though around a million dollars is mentioned.

Early Days of Arthur Manor
The Arthur Manor development in Scarsdale on the east side of the Post road between Carman avenue and Maple avenue traces its name to the family of Chester Alan Arthur, twenty first president of the United States. The Arthur Manor House, now two hundred and fifty years old, stands on the Post road and is the residence of Frank G. Swartwout, organizer and longtime president of the Arthur Suburban Home Company which bought the Arthur farm of 150 acres in 189?. Arthur, born in Fairfield Vermont in 1830, was Union College graduate 1848 and NY bar 1854. He secured a 1855 ruling that negroes could ride streetcars with whites in New York. He served as customs collector for New York port starting 1871, later vice president under Garfield, and became president after Garfield's 1881 death. In 1884 he lost renomination to Blaine supporters, then returned to New York where he died November 18, 1886. Twenty two arrests, ten fines, twelve suspended sentences, eleven cases pending and seventy five dollars in fines were recorded by the Scarsdale police court last week. Passing signal lights led in suspended sentences while parking and unmuzzled dogs tied for second. other violations included speeding reckless driving and unsafe vehicle operations. The Romanello Company of New Rochelle paid ten dollars after its steam roller on the Post road created a public nuisance with smoke. Additional fines covered speeding and passing signal lights, failure to stop at signals, and other traffic infractions.

Parkway Collision Leads to Mutual Reckless Driving Charges

Sedan Upset by Speeding Car on Heathcote Road
The Rev. Alan R. Chalmers his two children Ruth and Kathleen and Mrs. Chalmers' brother Paul Nash of Cambridge narrowly escaped serious injury when a speeding touring car side-swiped his Ford sedan on Heathcote road near Kelwyn road. The sedan overturned into a ditch as the other car fled the scene with the driver seen glancing back. The incident occurred as Mr. Chalmers headed to the Church of St. James the Less after visiting a sick parishioner.
