Rights to salmon fishing upheld for Indians in Idaho
A Seventh District Court judge in Idaho ruled Wednesday that Native Americans retain rights to fish for salmon on unoccupied U. S. land under the Fort Bridger Treaty of 1868. The decision sided with Gerald Cleo Tinne in a case arising from his 1968 arrest for illegal fishing in the Yankee Fork of the Salmon River, asserting tribal sustenance rights pass to successors in interest.
