More About Real Escape Route Cont From Page One
A mining official explains that at 5 600 feet depth the escape would require a 2 000 foot vertical climb and that upper level ventilation shafts had unreliable ladders. Bureau of Mines inspectors in 1970 said Sun shine Mine had two escapeways, but only a single route existed in reality, forcing workers to use an elevator. When the operator died, most men 5 600 feet underground were trapped with no real escape.
