The Idaho legislature adjourned without a blanket 18 year old age of majority bill but lowered ages for jury service marriage and other rights to 18 in several measures. They reduced wine and liquor ages to 19 and beer to 19 effective July 1, while debating constitutional questions. The session also funded education for mothers under 21 and required districts to provide for mentally retarded or handicapped children. A proposed 18 year voting age amendment was repealed as unnecessary. Some bills on student dress codes and child care licensing failed.
Idaho lawmakers provided insufficient funds to maintain anti pollution programs. Dr Lee Stokes notes last year’s actual spending exceeded current appropriation by over 20000 dollars. Al Eiguren says a 5000 dollar increase is only about four percent and may force termination of two federally funded positions.
Idaho congressmen Orval Hansen and James McClure announced tentative May 15 hearings in Washington on the Salmon Falls division of the Upper Snake River Reclamation Project. They sponsor legislation authorizing a $62 million project to supply water for about 64,100 acres in the Salmon Tract south of Twin Falls. The plan would authorize building the Milner Pumping Station above Milner Dam to move Snake River water to the area.
