Senate defeats Nixon wage bill as McGovern backs liberal approach
The Senate narrowly rejected the administration plan to raise the minimum wage to 2 by 1970, voting 47 to 46. McGovern left a South Dakota vacation to back the liberal Democratic bill, which would raise to 2 for nonfarm workers by fall and to 2.20 a year later, extending coverage to 8.4 million workers including maidservants and civil servants, with farm workers phased in to 2.20 by 1975. The House had passed the Nixon bill last May, and a reconciliation is needed before final action tonight.
