Hughes Airwest DC9 hijack ends with money demand in Las Vegas
A Hughes Airwest DC9 bound for Reno was hijacked at Las Vegas airport by a man demanding two parachutes a crash helmet and 50000 in small bills. He halted the plane as it rolled for takeoff with 67 passengers aboard. Deputies arranged to provide two parachutes and a helmet while negotiations continued for the ransom. The hijacker claimed to have a bomb and preferred tens and twenties in the ransom. The incident prompted brief evacuation of women children and a priest and the aircraft was later secured at McCarran Airport after police cut red lights and stood by with rescue units.

Local firms back NIC vocational students with grants
Five Kootenai County businesses led by Atlas Building Center and Kootenai Electric Cooperative provide a total of 1050 dollars to North Idaho College vocational students. The Pacific Gas Transmission Matching Grant program funds these awards, matching local contributions. NIC's Clarence Haught notes limited summer part time jobs and ineligibility for many federal aid programs heighten the value of the grants.
