Two shoe plants employing about 700 workers said they would close Wednesday as contracts with Local 294 of the United Shoe Workers expired. Knapp King Size Corp in Brockton and Commonwealth Shoe and Leather Co in Whitman folded with workers to receive vacation pay and possible relief or job aid via the U.S. Tariff Commission.
Washington reports that British officials say dogs can be trained to detect explosives and narcotics among airline passengers. Oliver St. John of the Ministry of Trade and Industry notes nitroglycerine TNT and marijuana are targeted and foresees passengers passing a security line of dogs before boarding planes. In a separate note, Idaho State Police advise easing off the gas and pumping brakes early on slippery roads.
