Factory Output Rises as GM Resumes Production
UPI reports December factory output rose 1.4 percent the sharpest gain in three years as GM restarts after a two month strike. The Fed index advanced a fourth time in 18 months driven entirely by autos with other industries flat or mixed and unemployment rising.

22 SHS Skiers Headed to Crystal Mountain
A coeducational group of 22 Sandpoint High School students will leave tonight for a two day ski outing at Crystal Mountain ski resort southeast of Tacoma Washington. They travel by school bus with three adult chaperones led by Jerry Myers and will stay with Buckley High School students in the Buckley area. A reciprocal trip by Buckley skiers to Sandpoint is planned for February 5 6 and 7 at Schweitzer Basin.

Idahoans Ill From Eating Raw Bear Meat
The National Center for Disease Control reports a trichinosis outbreak in Shoshone County Idaho after residents ate uncooked bear meat. A two year old black bear found near a garbage dump was butchered into roasts and jerky. the meat was brined smoked and not cooked. Of 23 eaters eleven showed symptoms and four had positive skin tests.

Mercury Poisoned Fish Found In Snake River
Health Administrator Dr. Terrell Carver announced that fish from the Snake River reservoirs contain unsafe mercury levels. About 19.3 percent of 160 samples exceeded 0.5 ppm. Guidelines urge limiting consumption to 0.5 pounds weekly and advise pregnant women and children to avoid Idaho water fish. A catch and release policy is urged for Jordan Creek and Snake River fish. Potential contamination sources include gold mining runoff, mercury-treated agricultural chemicals, broken thermometers disposal, and sewage systems.

Plane search fails to find missing single engine craft
In Elko Nevada a missing three person plane is not found after a Thursday search. The Civil Air Patrol flew four planes but snow and wind slowed the hunt. Clayton Duffy of Belview Idaho is tentatively identified as the pilot. two passengers’ names remain unknown.
