Tall Dutch elm felled at Macon Road farm
A 100-year-old elm on Paul Hammond farm near Macon Road was cut by Owens Tree Service and Surgery of Tecumseh after a long decline from Dutch elm disease and a lightning strike. It stood about 80 feet in height in its prime, with a girth over 15 feet, and was replaced by a newer street shade tree after failed preservation efforts.

The Saline High School Debate and Forensic Club met Friday and elected officers: Mike Hintz president Gary Graff vice president Alyce Krivsky secretary Barbara Ealy treasurer Noreen Ferris student council representative and Jo Anne Doll reporter Meetings are set for every Wednesday at 7 in room 22. The district’s school negotiators also wrapped up the 1969 70 master contract details with a Labor Mediation Board input before ratification. Shirley Vezina and brother Brian won prizes in the Saline Fair decorated bikes, living at 318 East Henry Street.

Northwest Passage voyage marks historic ice-breaker voyage
Walter Devine, son of Mrs Ethel Devine of 200 Monroe St, sailed aboard the Humble Oil Manhattan ice-breaker tanker on the Arctic Northwest Passage. The ship, cut and rejoined from four sections, began its exploratory voyage amid oil exploration at Prudhoe Bay. Devine, a naval architect, helped design the vessel and studied its performance during the Alaska passage. He and his wife and seven children live in Houston, while his mother and uncle reside in Saline.

Special Music Planned For Saline Library Open House
Flowers and refreshments will accompany chamber music at the Saline Public Library open house Sunday from 2 to 5 pm. The Goliard Brass Ensemble of University of Michigan musicians will perform Baroque and later works. Mrs John Thess will be installed as president of the Charity Association OBS at Dexter High School during a ceremony Saturday. A dinner at 6 pm at the Masonic Temple will precede the installation and the Saline chapter will honor past first vice presidents. Zoning Change Denied for R & B Machine Tool Co on E Henry St
Planning commission recommends denial of R B Machine Tool Co request to switch from commercial to industrial zoning for lots 106 108 E Henry St on the south side. Officials say the designation would be spot zoning and conflict with long range land use plan led by William Meister. The firm planned a pattern shop at the site. A separate note says a coach grievance at Saline High School heads to arbitration after Don Jaeger was removed without adequate notice. He remains as PE and drivers education teacher. James Bradley replaces him as coach.

Kick Off Events Planned for United Fund Drive

An October 14 dinner at Leutheser's Restaurant for campaign workers, sponsored by Hoover Ball and Bearing Co, with Mrs. Robert Dobson as chair. Saline Council Looks At Cable TV Regulation Ordinance
The Saline Council in a first reading studied an ordinance to regulate CATV use. It accepted three study sources including a CATV franchise model from Michigan Communications Group and a NEMLO model with local clarifications by City Attorney Allan Grossman. He noted the NEMLO plan is broader than Saline needs and explained revocable city franchises require a three-fifths elector vote for non revocable terms.
