The village beauty pageant reaches its climax tonight at 8:30 p.m. with Miss Saline to be crowned during ceremonies at the Saline Community Fair. Judging occurred Tuesday at Leutheuser's Restaurant and Jaycees will treat contestants to a Leutheuser's dinner before the final crown. Dawn Smiley, last year's winner, will return from Grand Rapids College to compete.
A Saline city council resolution strips the mayor and any city action from endorsing letters to the press without council approval. Council members Decker Rogers Anderson Bredernitz and Gross pass the measure amid Mayor Beach’s defiant counterpoint about authority. A Ford Motor Company sewage meter request prompts discussion on citizen rights to install city approved meters and access easements.
City Clerk Jack Vaughan issues public guidance on write-in candidates. He advises voters to consult an election official at the booth to ensure proper procedure, noting write-ins are valid but must be carefully marked and not displayed as advertising.
Saline Police responded to a 4 pm call on Sept 2 to aid Fontana Taylor Ambulance transporting Alfonso Lopez of 204 E Henry St to Saline Community Hospital where he was admitted for an undisclosed illness and remained a patient Tuesday. Barbara Osmer and Kenneth Rogers Jr sustained minor injuries in a two vehicle crash on U.S. 12 at Lewis St when Osmer allegedly rear ended Rogers. both treated and released. Saline Pharmacy theft involved $400 in rings taken from displays Monday Sept 4. investigation ongoing.
