Five Saline candidates discuss growth and city services in a tight race for council seats. Glenn Clark, Donald Dechert, George Johnson, and Robert Strohl present views on police and fire protection, budgeting, and controlling rapid housing expansion while emphasizing public involvement.

City Clerk Bill Muir reports a record surge in absentee ballot requests with 30 out by Wednesday and expectations for more. He notes requests have doubled the 1960 presidential year rate and that ballots must be voted and returned by Monday.
School superintendent Leo Jensen will be guest speaker Sunday evening at the Federated Church Evening Fellowship Meeting. He will discuss Saline Area Schools of Tomorrow. The meeting is at 8 pm and open to the public.

The Intermediate Room Mothers sponsor an Open House at the school on Wednesday November 7 at 8 p.m. in the gym. Dwight Reynolds principal will welcome and explain the evening program. Parents of 5th 6th and 7th graders should learn room numbers and sections. a coffee hour in the cafeteria closes the meeting.
The American Legion and Legion Auxiliary host a Halloween Masquerade Dance on Saturday November 3 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Legion hall. Ken Volz Orchestra provides the music for the event.
Emil A. Damroze a 23 year old machinist of Saline Valley Farms died when his car left Willis road near Bishop road, struck two trees and crushed the left side. Passenger Edsel Bardell 23 of Wayne was treated for cuts and bruises and released. Damroze leaves a wife Carol and two sons. Surviving relatives include his mother and siblings in Michigan and Europe. Funeral services were held at Bahnmiller Funeral Home with burial in Oakwood cemetery.
Saline meets Chelsea in a key Washtenaw Conference clash after Saline routed Pinckney 31 6 and Chelsea crushed Dexter 48 12. The Friday tilt pits unbeaten Saline star Jim Griffin and Bill Davis against Chelsea’s Jack Howard, Dick Laudon, and Curt Farley in a battle for the conference title.
City council approved removing meters in a downtown parking lot for November through January in a three month trial. A two hour limit will apply in the lot while street meters remain for transient traffic. The plan aims to boost downtown business and measure lost revenue. Robert Russell is rehired as city Civil Defense director at $500 a year.
Only two of four city council hopefuls attended a Saline Area Civic association meeting last Wednesday. Robert Strohl and George Johnson spoke while the others were absent.
United Fund contributions in Saline area totaled 558 in the first week, 5 percent of the 11 209 goal, drive chairman Herman Merte announced. Solicitation of residential districts is under way and all homes will be contacted within a week.

Roberts aged 22 of 102 McKay St were injured in a two car crash on Platt Rd north of Textile Rd in Pittsfield township at 7 55 p m Roberts car struck a bridge abutment then spun into the path of a car driven by Thomas H Wagener 18 of 260 W Textile Rd Merritt was a passenger Roberts suffered bruises to the left arm and Merritt a bruise to the left leg
Sue Washburn of Saline chapter becomes chairman of FHA Region II at a Dundee High School conclave. Advisors Mrs. David Gates and Mrs. George Washburn will serve as regional advisor and regional mother. Region II includes Washtenaw Leamwee Monroe and Jackson counties with over 500 members from 32 chapters attending. Reverend Rennex Van Scay of Toledo spoke on the theme Measuring Up With FHA.
