The planning commission recommended removing meters from the city parking lot for a three month trial in November December and January to aid merchants. City Council likely to approve after unanimous business support. Commission will study lost revenue and future lot needs.
Saline Hotel owner Henry Leutheuser announces relocation to the Harvey Kluwe site at the city edge with plans for a larger restaurant and a motel of at least 12 units. Carl’s Place will be demolished. Kluwe has no plans for his site. Leutheuser aims to open by next fall with 20 acres included.
The Saline Reporter announces its annual first snow guessing contest in Saline Michigan. Entrants submit by mail with an entry blank. Judges include Reporter staff city superintendent Mike Strait and Saline Police. A $25 prize is offered for the first snow to lay down perceptible whiteness unmelted for three minutes.
A brief appeal urging workers to contribute to the United Fund from distant locations. The notice emphasizes sending support home for communal aid and relief efforts.
Robert F. Tefft of Pittsfield township was elected president of Washtenaw County Farm Bureau at a re organization meeting in the county office. Carl Lesser of Dexter was replaced as outgoing chairman by Tefft with De Rene Feldkamp of Manchester as vice president and LoRen Trotz of Manchester as the third member of the executive committee. Emma Howeison will continue as secretary for the coming year.
Michigan car dealers report a strong start to 1963 with high sales interest and near record demand. Dodge dealer Jack Steele predicts at least 7 1/4 million sales, A M Chevrolet’s Walt Hinderer notes more buyers than ever, and Community Ford’s Ken Thompson calls public acceptance terrific. At presstime the Cuban crisis shows no clear impact on sales.
Saline area boys ages 9 to 16 may register for the Ann Arbor Indoor Ice Hockey league. Registration is Saturday 9 to 10 am at the Ann Arbor arena with a $10 fee for equipment and laundry, waiver required, and a parent must accompany the boy. Players bring stick skates and pads. other gear is loaned for the season. transportation aid available by calling HA 9 9129.
Saline area High School announces honor rolls arranged by group. Highest Academic Honor requires A minus or better in six academic subjects. Academic Honor includes B or better in five or four subjects. General Honor Roll needs at least a B average in all six subjects. Alphabetical lists include Martha Escherri Olson, Kathie Reed, Gayle Finkbeiner, and others.
After an emergency meeting with teachers, the district outlines bus procedures for attack warnings. Buses will depart from the Elementary School with town children only, other town children from other schools walk home. Buses stay parked at the Elementary School. teachers are assigned to each bus to prevent panic and assist loading and crossing. Parents are asked not to come by car. if they do, do not enter within a block of any school.
New officers of chapter 311 OES will be installed Saturday evening in a public ceremony at 8 p.m. at the Masonic Temple. Mrs. Harry Cogar will be installed as worthy matron. Other officers for 1962 63 include Hugh Austin as worthy patron Mrs. John Thoss as associate matron John Thoss as associate patron Mrs. Wayne Predmore as conductress Mrs. Howard McCann as associate conductress Mrs. Hugh Austin as secretary and Mrs. Frank Campbell as treasurer. Mrs. Lee Robison will be installing officer. Mrs. Robert Towner will be installing marshal Mrs. Everett Wolfin will be installing chaplain Mrs. George Austin will be installing organist. Mrs. Kenneth Auten and Mrs. Nelson Watling will sing.
Saline Community hospital auxiliary hosts a fundraiser at the American Legion hall on Friday November 9. A 6 p.m. smorgasbord leads into an 8 p.m. card party with a $1 ticket covering both events. Proceeds fund hospital equipment purchases. Tickets available from auxiliary members or local merchants. hall and kitchen use donated by the American Legion and its auxiliary.
The Pittsfield Grange invites the public to a Halloween dance on Saturday October 27 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Grange Hall with music by Ozzie's Orchestra.
The Women’s Society of Christian Service of Saline Methodist Church will host a smorgasbord at Saline High School from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday October 27.
L Lamont Okey of the University of Michigan urged Saline area United Fund workers to launch a drive with three steps toward better communication, service, and opportunity. More than 100 campaigners attended the kick off, with volunteers listed across city districts and rural sections. the drive aims for an $11,209 goal, a 344 percent increase locally over last year.
St John s E and R Church at Rogers Corner will sponsor a ham supper on Thursday November 1 with serving starting at 5 pm. Reservations may be made with Walt Hindered by calling HA 9 9481. Tickets cost 2 for adults and 1 for children.
