An innovation at the high school introduces a home economics class for bachelors taught by Nancy Kulenkamp. After machine shop plans collapsed, 16 enrollees learn meals, baking, bread making, sewing on buttons, mending socks, bed making, and color coordination to help them live independently and appear well dressed.
Walt Moore of 207 E Henry St just marked 35 years with no accident or moving violation and an estimated 1.4 million miles. He cites vigilance with kids, prudent rules for teens, and steady driving as keys to safety and lower insurance costs.
Open house will be held at the Junior High School at 8 pm Monday October 16. A meeting of the school PTO and a coffee hour will follow.
Band parents build new bleachers with 100 seat capacity for the Friday game against Tecumseh. The 7.5 member High School Band will sit in front of permanent bleachers without blocking views. Builders include Arnold Wild Jack Livingstone John Quick Frank Teachout and Glenn Weber.
S. J. Elden the Ann Arbor municipal judge will speak at the Rotary Club Thursday noon meeting at Leutheuser's Restaurant. The program chairman is Dr. Gordon Prout. The Chamber of Commerce will discuss Christmas decorations at an 8 a.m. meeting Tuesday in the Savings Bank community room.
The Kiwanis Club schedules a 6:30 p.m. dinner meeting at Walker's Bakery for Monday. The event invites members and guests to attend the annual gathering and discuss club affairs and community service plans.
The Rev. Robert Nelson, pastor of Saline Baptist Church and former machinist, now teaches three machine shop classes at the high school. He holds an honorary Doctor of Divinity and may be Michigan’s only machine shop teacher with a doctor’s decree. Principal Paul Thibault notes schedules are solidified with two evening classes possible if enrollment proves sufficient.
Hospital Auxiliary smorgasbord organizers met at Helen Mosher's home to finalize plans for the November 4 event at Jensen School. Co chairmen are Mrs. Mosher and Jean Radloff with coordinators for publicity tickets donations food kitchen dining room salads desserts and clean up. Tickets are 2 for adults 1 for children five to 12 years old. Children under five admitted free.
City Council on Monday approved preliminary remodeling plans for the old city hall. The architect is authorized to proceed and the city attorney will talks with the neighboring owner about moving the stairway to create a more comfortable access. The project may cost up to 20000 dollars, with Civil Defense funds possible for basement conversion to a CD headquarters. The plan includes roof, plumbing, wiring updates and restoring the historic fire bell with possible floodlighting.
Saline’s new Senior Citizens club requests financial help for recreation and asks to be included in the city recreation department. City council acknowledges the letter, seeks details, and notes no current budgeted funds but will consider provision this year and possibly include the group in next year’s budget.
The Rolling Meadows Community 6 plat was approved by the City Council despite a nay vote by Councilman George Anderson. It plans 50 town houses, a 10 acre park, and a north extension of Harris Street for emergency use, housing about 150 families and potentially 150 to 300 cars. Anderson opposed the plan citing traffic, direct street access, and city character concerns, while the mayor noted these are condo governed duplexes owned by residents.
Thorncrest Apartments on Clark Street will add 40 Swiss chalet style units in 15 buildings on 64 acres. The project, costing over 1 million dollars, will raise total units to 120 with 80 existing and 40 new, and is set for completion in the fall of next year. Carl Gaiser Associates of Birmingham is the designer with Eugene G. Holley of Ann Arbor as contractor.
Saline prepares a Navy visit with the Drum and Bugle Corps arriving Saturday. Little Joe the billy goat from the Paul Herter farm will accompany the group, with 14 year old Jean and 11 year old Dale Herter guiding the mascot. Officials, including Mayor George Johnson, greet the guests at Saline High School before the corps travels to Ann Arbor for the U M Navy game.
Rural area captains for the 1967 United Fund campaign were announced by campaign chairman Don Church. Names include Mrs. Dwight Reynolds area five, Mrs. Ralph Kring area six, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Martin area seven, and Mrs. Kenneth Youngs area eight. Aldean Jedele will head the Bridgewater drive. City divisions name chairs Bart Strahley in business contributions, Robert Bredernitz industry, Milton Finkbeiner building trades, Ward Estes MEHA. CKLW disk jockey Dave Shafer will speak at the campaign kickoff dinner at 7 p.m. October 12 at the American Legion Hall.
The city planning commission will hold a meeting at 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the city council chambers to discuss upcoming development plans.
