Saline Band Receives Historic Gift of Drum and Tuba

Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Martin gift Saline's Band two historic instruments, a drum and a tuba, once used by Saline volunteers and the 1876 town band. The drums trace to George Barr, born 1864, who later played in local groups, while the tuba belonged to the era when the band rode in a carved wagon.

YSH Service Council Elects New Officers

Mrs. Thomas Buchanan is elected president of the Ypsilanti State Hospital Volunteer Service Council to be installed at the January meeting. Other officers include Mrs. Edward Kapelanski first vice president and Mrs. George Carrol second vice president. The group seeks trading stamps for a second bus and furnishings for the patients day room. Donations to the Community Relations Office are welcome.

Wackenhut Wins 1st Snow Contest

Harold Wacken hut of 113 Russell St won the Reporter annual First Snow Contest. His guess of 3 30 p m Thursday November 19 matched near the solid white blanket time within two hours 50 minutes. Jim Lake of 8910 Saline Milan Rd was close with 9 35 p m the same day. Seven entries were received.

Paul Haeussler Hurt as Tree Falls on Him at Farm

Paul Haeussler fifty of 10731 Bethel Church Road was critically injured when a tree he was cutting on Rudolph Feldkamp farm 8400 Weber in Lodi Township fell on him. Neighbors helped lift the tree and he was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Ann Arbor with back hip and chest injuries.

Township Taxes Slightly Higher Says Supervisor

Lodi Township residents will see a 1964 tax increase with statements going out in about 10 days. Erwin Frederick, supervisor, notes higher county taxes and school millages in Ann Arbor, Dexter, and Saline districts, while Lodi has no township tax and Saline remains a small increase.

Jaycees will go door to door Friday evening December 4 starting at 7 pm to raise funds for Christmas gifts for Saline area children. Members will sample Benson's Old Home Fruit Cake priced at 1.75 dollars for 1 ½ pound and 3.25 dollars for three pounds.

Spark from Chimney Sets Roof on Hoeft Home

A spark from the chimney set the roof on William Hoeft’s home at 7545 Klager Rd Monday morning. The fire was extinguished before spreading, with damage limited to the roof and minor water damage to the floor. Hoeft and his son Louis battled the blaze with a garden hose until Saline firefighters arrived and stayed about an hour. The house lies seven miles from Saline.

El Paso Crash Claims Julia Bird Crocker Before Anniversary

Julia Bird Crocker 23 died instantly in a Texas crash on Sunday while en route to church with husband Bob who is listed in critical condition. They married December 28, 1963, in Saline and lived in El Paso where Bob works at White Sands Missile Base. Julia born January 24, 1941, is survived by parents Karl and Mrs. Bird and several siblings. Funeral arrangements are pending with Rodehaver-Miller Funeral Home El Paso. Memorials may be directed to York Baptist Church building fund via Ronald Desbrugh Saline.
