United Fund Drive Inches Up to 75 Percent

The United Fund reached 75 percent of its 111209 goal, totaling 8259.77 after flu slowed both residents and solicitors. Chairman Herman Merte said the drive extends until all reports arrive and urged uncontacted households to mail contributions to the Postmaster in Saline.

Frank Campbell 69 longtime Amstutz Hatcheries office manager died suddenly Saturday at his home 206 S Davenport Saline Mich He lived in the area since 1938 worked at Saline Valley Farms 1938 1940 and Amstutz Hatcheries 1940 1960 He was born in Marlette Mich January 19 1893 married Ruth Maynard July 10 1925 in Birmingham Mich Surviving include wife daughter Sally grand children and several siblings Funeral services were held at Saline Methodist Church with Eastern Star and Masonic rites. memorials to the church or Michigan Heart Fund.

Mary Lou Hess 23 of Willis Rd took a $1.89 vitamin bottle. Leslie Chambers 33 of Detroit pleaded guilty to simple larceny, fined $35 and costs, 30 days with 1 year suspension.

Deer Hunters Return With Laden Fenders

Deer hunters return from opening day with deer strapped to hoods fenders and car tops as traffic backs up across the state. Saline Savings Bank will mail 25737.20 in Christmas Club checks early next week, slightly higher than last year's amount. Earlier this week Citizens Bank sent out Christmas Club checks totaling 20200.

Councilmen Race Calendar As Sidewalk Owners Stall

Corn for the Christian Rural Overseas Program collected by Grange groups across the county will be gathered and shipped by the Saline Mercantile Co. in early December. Local donations go to the Mercantile elevator December 12 and 13, with Dexter and Ypsilanti arrivals on December 14 and all sent out December 15. The Mercantile Co. collects as a public service if shelled. otherwise a small shelling fee applies. A state Grange officer typically attends the collection period.

School Absentee Rates Surge During Flu Peak

The flu outbreak hit three schools with nearly 20 percent absent on Friday and a 14 percent rate by Tuesday. At 5 acre Elementary 131 pupils were out, Intermediate School counts rose to 41, while High School saw 60 absent plus 15 sent home amid deer hunting absence. Overall student population totals 570.
