The Saline area United Fund drive rose from 15 percent to 65 percent of its $11,209 goal, totaling $7,265.40. Canvassing of industrial and residential areas continues as drive chair Herman Merte urges final receipts within one week and warns against unauthorized solicitors.
The Washtenaw county Red Cross board of directors meets Tuesday at St Pauls E R Church. A 6 30 p m dinner is open to the public hosted by Saline area leaders. A special Red Cross report on international and Cuban issues is planned along with progress on the Operations Center drive. Reservations cost 1 75 and may be made by phone or through local coordinators.
Saline High School Coach Don Jaeger says the Hornets rebuild after losing most scoring and rebounding from last year. The 1962 63 squad relies on seniors Mike Johnson and Keith Armbruster plus a core of juniors and a sophomore to form a quick cohesive unit for upcoming games against Milan Dexter and a challenge to restore a championship tradition.
George and Theda Conner with son Georgie settle in Comins Michigan and operate The Knot Hole on Route 33. Georgie excels in school and joins the Boy Scouts while deer hunting nearby draws friends from Mio and Crystal Falls area. Local hunters George Washburn Jerry McDonald Saline ties and hospital news complete the note.
High School seniors stage a WWII era mystery farce Ramshackle Inn December 5 6 7 in the Little Theater at 8 p.m. Cast changes due to injury. Mike Johnson takes over the villain role Dr Russell. Props include two police uniforms and a trunk sized for a person to hide in with special effects needed for thunder wind truck start and door actions.
Margaret Sue Hartung, recently moved to 3581 Textile Rd in Saline from Adrian, is temporarily employed as city bookkeeper. Known as Sue to friends, she has worked as a bookkeeper for Goldberg Advertising in Ann Arbor, and her husband Robert Hartung manages the Montgomery Ward shoe department at Arborland. The Hartung children Robert Eugene 10 Denise Carol 9 and Jodi Rae 6 attend Saline schools. The family enjoys photography but time is scarce for career wife and mother duties.
Saline Jaycees will run their annual door-to-door sale of holiday fruit cakes Friday from 6 30 to 8 p m in the city. Each 134 pound cake sells for 1 75 with proceeds benefiting public service projects. Chuck Stratton is chairman of the fruit cake drive.
The Saline Reporter will publish a day early next week to mail to subscribers on Wednesday the eve of Thanksgiving. Advertisements must be received by Monday noon and all news stories by 5 p.m. Monday.
Frederick Sundling 38 of West Henry Street was hospitalized at Saline Community with a head cut and back injuries after his car flipped over in Lodi Township. Deputies said he drove south on Saline Arbor Road near Textile Road when he lost control, struck a culvert and overturned.
The Saline Child Study Club will meet Tuesday, November 20 at 8 p.m. at 99 W. Henry St. Rev. Fr. Gaughan of Ann Arbor will speak on Development of Moral and Spiritual Values. Hostesses are Mrs. Willard Hertler and Mrs. Harold Wilson. members and guests invited.

City Council offers two weeks of free street parking to spur holiday shopping. Meter bags reading Merry Christmas cover meters for the period. Municipal lot removed for a three month trial with two hour limits. no policing before Christmas. Merchants urged to keep spots open for customers.
A union Thanksgiving service for members and friends of the Methodist Church St. Paul’s E and R Church and the Federated First Baptist and Presbyterian Church will be held at 8 p m Wednesday November 21 at the Methodist Church. Rev George Laurent will lead the service and Richard See ger will direct the combined choirs. Bethel church members join the Union service at Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Manchester at 8 p m Wednesday.
At Saline High School, triplets Nancy Mary and Rebecca Handy, ninth graders and daughters of James Handy Jr, draw attention as the district faces a flu season impact. The Handy family, new residents on Waterworks road, previously lived on 311 East Michigan Avenue.
The Saline area Business Development group and Chamber of Commerce seek acreage in the Saline area school district to offer to industries. Allan Grossman notes ongoing inquiries for a light manufacturing plant and explains the group will pay $1 for an option, cancellable with 30 days' notice, to secure sites near the city with sewer and water upon annexation.
Four-continental ELI delegation visited Saline touring the High School Saline Valley Farms Austin Orchards and The Reporter office. Local hosts included Bess Tefft and tea guests Mrs Donald McKenzie Mrs Charles Kern Mrs Howard Kuhl Mrs Arthur Heininger and Mrs Paul Woods Sr.
The Saline Community Hospital Auxiliary will gather at 8 p.m. on Tuesday November 20 at the home of Mrs Waldo Gross.
An unnamed flu outbreak affected Elementary, Intermediate, and High Schools with widespread absences. At Elementary 67 students were absent by Wednesday noon and five teachers plus the principal were ill. Illness lasted 48 to 72 hours and doctors urged rest and home care. Principal Marian Barclay among those listed as sick.
All Saline area schools will be dismissed Thursday and Friday November 22 and 23 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Conferences at the Elementary School will be held Monday afternoon November 26 and there will be no afternoon kindergarten on that day.
Patients at Ypsilanti State hospital hope for two buses to enable trips to recreation. A drive seeks 5 500 Gold Bell Gift Stamps, with 1 050 books collected so far and 4 450 still needed. Stamps can be deposited at Country Market Gamble's or with Mrs Kevling or Mrs Buchanan or mailed to the hospital.
