Saline businessmen and residents discuss the stock market drop with little alarm. investors note past selloffs and expect a recovery, while bankers caution against panic. They cite steel tensions, inflation of shares, and safety nets like FDIC and lower margin requirements as stabilizing factors.
The Fundamental Baptist Church seeks a building site of at least an acre in the northern city area or nearby for a new church. Started in 1959, it has seven families and others meeting, now outgrowing the former hardware store on W Michigan Ave. The goal is to complete by summer with land in the north, and interested sellers can contact Rev. K W Mosher at HA 9-7344.
Saline High School announces a six week summer typing course from 8 to 10 a.m. five days weekly beginning June 11. Larry Smith will teach a non business type course offering one quarter credit for students and open to adults and students not already scheduled for typing next year. Estimated total cost is 240 dollars with per student about 15 to 22 dollars. Call the high school office to enroll.
Five year old Jennifer Cook of Tecumseh suffered facial and head lacerations when a car she rode in skidded on a rainy stretch at 658 West Michigan Avenue and hit a retaining wall six feet from the road. Driver Lynelle Eloise Cook, 34, also of Tecumseh, was involved. she and the girl were treated and released from Saline Community Hospital.
The Ladies Aid Society of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church marks 75 years this month with a morning worship service on Sunday June 3 and an informal pot luck dinner at 12 30 p m. Founded in 1887 by Mrs. Hannah Lederer the group began with 13 charter members.
John and Wesley Feldkamp of Saline township seek a declaration of ownership rights for their auto scrap yard J and W Wreckers at 9280 Feldkamp Rd. The case challenges township rules banning burning trash, restricting ownership transfer, and requiring an eight foot aluminum fence and limited yard use. The circuit court may set a new date around June 5 or June 19 with the status quo in place.
Petitions for City Council candidates must be filed with the City Clerk before August 7. Three councilmen and a mayor are to be elected in the November ballot.
Two Saline teens, Mike Johnson and Serge Vaisman, placed first and second respectively at the Jaycee Teen-Age Road-E-O in Belding after 12 entries. Johnson won with 315 of 400 points and received a $25 savings bond and plaque. Vaisman scored 308 and earned a $25 bond. Third place went to Howard Schrader with 299 points. All are juniors at Saline High School. Ed Doll led the event with support from Ron Finkbeiner and G Merritt Martin.
Approximately 680 community calendars have been sold in the annual drive by Band Parents co chairmen Mrs Regis Wolfinger and Mrs Robert Mittendorf. Proceeds fund the band's trip to Interlochen National Music Camp. Calendars include about 1800 listings. final reports due this week. Saline Chamber of Commerce meets 8 p m Tuesday at the Saline Savings Bank meeting room.
City Council approved Ordinance 161 to regulate water use during emergencies. Councilman George Johnson said the measure targets unnecessary uses like car washing and lawn watering. The rule defines an emergency as water supply inadequacy and imposes a $100 fine or 60 days in jail for violations.

The Saline Jaycees and Auxiliary plan a 7 p.m. June 6 installation dinner at the Saline Hotel. David Cobb will install officers and present awards. The poppy sale by the Auxiliary last Friday and Saturday raised 300 dollars, according to poppy chairman Lola Dell.
The High School gym hosts both Baccalaureate and Commencement at 8:15 p.m. Each event features distinct programs with Judd Arnett as the speaker for the Commencement. Baccalaureate is Sunday June 3 and Commencement Thursday June 7. Mildred Haswell directs the activities.
Tickets for the Wash tenaw county Farm Council annual Bar-B-Q go on sale with Frank Haggard as finance chair. The event on June 17 aims to attract 5 000 attendees and raise funds for a new show building and maintained facilities at the Farm Council center.
Saline area schools won a reduced county tax allotment of 4.76 mills, down from 9.32 total county and 12 mills sought. The Tax Allocation Board, with Jensen and trustees present, cut millage across most districts except inter county ones, with Pittsfield’s request withdrawn and Saline schools likely to seek an operational millage vote later this year.
All Saline area schools will hold only morning sessions on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday June 4 5 and 6 with no school on Thursday June 7 Students return Friday June 8 briefly to pick up report cards Kindergarten morning sessions run first three days of the week The afternoon session closes for the year on Friday June 1.
