Richmond Mayor Sees Value in Local Efforts and School Millage

Richmond mayor Matthew J. Killewald Jr says “Our people are our biggest asset” as he tours Saline during May or Exchange Day. He cites community support for a pool complex and warns about sewer and storm drain needs while noting millage proposals have faced defeats and an upcoming June vote on school funding.

Memorial Day Parade and Services in Saline

Saline honors war dead from American Revolution to Vietnam with a parade led by William B. Lutz Post 322 American Legion. Senator Gilbert Bursey will speak at Oakwood Cemetery with Reverend George Saucier giving the invocation. The procession starts May 30 at 10 a.m. from Harris Street and Michigan Avenue, then to the cemetery and back after the service. Participants include veterans groups, Saline High School bands, Junior Auxiliary, scouts, and baton corps.

Poppy Days Set for Thursday Through Saturday

Poppy Days will be observed in Saline by American Legion Auxiliary volunteers on Thursday Friday and Saturday to aid disabled and deceased veterans and their families. Dimes and dollars go to rehabilitation and child welfare programs of the Legion and Auxiliary. funds are not kept by the groups. The poppies are crafted by hospitalized veterans.

Hundreds Attend Co-op Breakfast

The third annual Employer-Employee-Parent Breakfast sponsored by the Saline School Cooperative Training Program drew about 200 attendees on Friday. The program placed nearly 60 students this year with speakers including Richard Nisbet of Eastern Michigan University, Dave Potter of Community Food Sales, Robert Helber of National Bank and Trust, and former student Terry Nowlan. James Bradley, the program’s coordinator, hosted and received an attache case from students who announced Friday as his birthday.

Dancers Readies Big Recital at Local High School

Over 200 Mary Lou Gall dance students perform a four act recital this weekend in the High School Little Theater. Shows are Friday and Saturday at 7 30 p m and Sunday at 2 p m with all proceeds to the High School band. Tickets 75 cents at the Dance Studio 114 By Henry St or from band members.

Saline historian honored for 50 years in DAR

Bessie Carren Collins of Saline received a 50 year DAR member award at a Saline Library ceremony. She wrote a family genealogy Descendants and Ancestors of Daniel and Abigail Wallace and lives at 202 S Ann Arbor St. Her DAR ties go to the Wallace family who came to Michigan in 1832. Collins joined the Ypsilanti DAR chapter in 1919 after graduating from Eastern Michigan College.

The Saline High School Alumni Banquet is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday June 14 at the school. Officers will be elected. No alumni dance is scheduled this year.

A Saline Library special shelf now hosts 16 books for Girl Scout leaders funded by United Fund donations. The volumes cover organizing troops games songs outdoor cooking projects and arts to aid troop activities.

Ford Saline awards honor 12 community service volunteers

Twelve Ford Saline plant workers and spouses were honored at the third annual Community Service Awards held at Leutheuser’s in Saline. Outstanding Service plaques went to Erwin Feldkamp Don Holloway Viola Ingledue and Harold McRae. eight Citations were given to Adkins Bauch Henning Sole and others.
