Sousa Band Award Highlighted At Saline Spring Concert

The John Philip Sousa Band Award will be presented to a Saline High School Concert Band member at Sundays 3 p.m. Spring Concert in the high school gym. Previous winners include Pat Johnson Alice Sheehan and Dave Myers. The event features guest conductor Lester McCoy guest soloist Ron Attinger and Bob Austin as band soloist with a flute section showcase. Displays from art and industrial arts departments will also be shown downtown at Wight's Cleaners window.

Willing Workers Club to Elect Officers Meeting This May

Members of the Willing Workers Club will meet at 8 pm Thursday May 21 at the home of Mrs. Everett Gilbert. Devotions will be led by Mrs. Harlan Holcomb. Officers for the coming year will be elected and dues will be collected.

Saline Millage Allocation Dropped From Last Year

Saline School millage was set at 9.16 mills in a preliminary Washtenaw County Tax Allocation Board meeting at the County Building. The figure is down from 9.68 mills last year, with initial requests at 12.9 and a tentative budget around 12.5. York Township allocations and potential future millage actions could further adjust Saline totals. A final hearing is scheduled for May 27, and Saline’s Memorial Day Parade is set for May 30 with services at Oakwood Cemetery.

Saline thinclads place third in league meet at Chelsea

Saline's track team finished third among seven Washtenaw Conference schools at Chelsea. John Harvey broke the league 440 record with 51.7 seconds before suffering a broken left foot and will miss the State Meet. The 880 relay, 440 records by Harvey, high and low hurdles by Chuck Still, and Feldkamp's 220 mark highlighted the meet.

Saline Alumnae Banquet and Dance Set for June 6

Saline High School hosts a banquet at 6 30 p m and a dance at 9 00 p m on Saturday June 6 at the high school. Reservations for the banquet are due by June 1 with Sara Schaible 8005 Pleasant Lake Rd Ann Arbor. Dance tickets available at the door.

Vehicle safety inspection set on Hall Street

Saline Police and Auxiliary Police will conduct a vehicle equipment safety inspection all day Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Hall Street. There is no charge to drivers who request inspection and no tickets will be issued for violations found if any. Inspectors will recommend repairs if needed and urge work be done before Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day Rodeo Draws National Riders at 4-D Ranch

Professional rodeo riders from across the country enter the Jaycee sponsored event at the 4-D Ranch on Waters Rd over Memorial Day weekend. Student Council Elects First Feminine President

Sue OConnor, a sophomore, becomes the first female school president at the high school, receiving recognition during Recognition Night amid loud applause. She also leads in clubs and mock activities, with future plans to facilitate girl presidents and a history of student service and honors.

Young Council To Test City Hall In Michigan Week

A student mayor and six student councilmen will meet at City Hall to discuss city affairs before the regular council session. Elected Friday from a 10th grade government class at the high school, the group includes Mayor Jim Heckman and council members Bob Moranville Mike Rapp David Osborn Kallan Liston Ann Flock and Sue OConnor. The two women may be Saline's first female council members. Mayor Heckman joined in Mayor's Exchange Day activities Monday with Saline and Grant officials.

Mrs Paul Woods Heads Saline Hospital Auxiliary Group

Mrs Paul Woods was elected president for the coming year at a Saline Community Hospital Auxiliary meeting Tuesday evening. Mrs Sam Lambarth was named first vice president with new officers including Mrs Carl Rhoades second vice president, Mrs Winifred Gall recording secretary, Mrs James Davis corresponding secretary, and Mrs Edward Hall treasurer.

A farewell dinner honoring retiring School Superintendent Leo Jensen is set for Saturday June 20 at the High School. Mrs Everett Wolffin serves as general chairman and further details will be announced later.

Saline School Chief Leo Jensen resigns to take Florida post

After 21 years as Saline superintendent, Leo Jensen resigns effective June 30. He will move to Bonita Beach Florida with his family to run eight efficiency cottages with son in law Harry Kemp, while Kemp remains Berkley Junior High principal. A search committee and educational placement firm will seek a successor. Jensen, a Stanton Michigan native, led Saline through consolidation and new school buildings. He notes appreciation for community and plans to return for visits.
