Saline to Launch Michigan Week With City Events

Saline opens Michigan Week two days early with a 2 p.m. Saturday program featuring Tom Doenges, Mayor Bennett, a student mayor, and prize poster winners. Free parking, flag ceremonies, a WOIA radio presence, and a High School Band concert mark the kickoff, followed by a week of tours, exhibits, and community happenings across the city.

Annual Spring Band Festival Program Set

Plans are finalized for the annual Spring Band Concert at Saline High School gymnasium Sunday May 24 at 3 p.m. Performances include the Saline High School Concert Band, Saline Junior High Band, guest conductor Lester McCoy, guest soloist Ron Attinger, soloist Bob Austin, a flute solo, and a premiere Symphony for Band. Proceeds fund Saline summer Band Camp at Camp Canuga near Grayling.

Winners of Poppy Poster Contest Are All Boys

The American Legion Auxiliary annual poppy poster contest this year had all boy winners. Bruce Newman won first place in group II, with Gene Kind and Jim Steiner second and third. Larry Hieber won first in group III, with Dennis Rogers and Dan Bennett second and third. Judges were Mrs. Rudenz Douthat and Mrs. Ormond Bredernitz. Awards were given at a Poppy Tea at the Legion Hall on Wednesday. First-place posters advance to district competition.

Delegates Named for Wolv erine Boys State at MSU

The American Legion named Tom Sutton and Kurt Fischer as delegates to Wolv erine Boys State to be held at Michigan State University in June. Bruce Uphaus and Dan Morton are alternates. Kurt Fischer is Saline High School freshman class president and a Key Club member. Sutton is Rolland Sutton’s son and serves as class treasurer and Teen Club president. Both active in football, clubs, and scouting, Sutton plans to attend the National Jamboree in July at Valley Forge.

Roll ing Meadows plans 360 new homes by Whittier Co

Whittier Construction Co plans to build about 360 homes in the Roll ing Meadows subdivision with 38 started at once. At least 18 homes should be ready for occupancy by October. Model homes priced at 13990 cover six rooms in 1000 square feet with three bedrooms and a full basement. Built ins are optional. Whittier Construction Co is based in Huntington Woods.

Saline Fire Dept Responds Twice To Local Blazes

Saline Fire Department was called out twice this week. Saturday saw a grass fire behind Vescio's Market and Monday a chimney fire at Harold Graden residence 7800 Waters Rd. No damage reported from the chimney incident. A clock vanished from Still's Hotel lobby during a brief 15 minute interval after 8 p.m.

Marcia Feldkamp Wins Board Scholarship at Western U

Marcia Feldkamp of 8275 Waterworks Rd. was awarded a Board scholarship by Western Michigan University. She plans to study elementary education or librarianship and has a long record of high honors. She presides over FHA, belongs to GAA, and participates in Student Council, the Hornet staff, and Bethel UCC Youth Fellowship.

City to Remove Weeds at Tower Drive Center

City Council agreed to clean and maintain the Tower Drive center section after resident Russ Hollenback complained about the unsightly weeds. He said he sent a letter last summer but received no response.

Winton Defends Crestwood Knolls Amid Buyer Protests

Developer Frank Winton responded to complaints from Crestwood Knolls buyers at a Saline City Council session. He cited strong sales, 80 firm contracts of 94 lots, and ongoing repairs funded by the developer. Winton argued deviations improved quality, explained grading approved by FHA VA and the city, and noted weather affected repairs and concrete work.

Three candidates file for two Saline school board seats

Basman Coe and Girbach join for the June 8 election to fill two four year terms on Saline Board of Education. Incumbent Ray Girbach seeks re election. Basman is a Burroughs program director with degrees from Robert College University of Michigan and University of Turkey. Gerald Coe is a Saline businessman and former board member. The election takes place at the Intermediate School amid Saline switching to a registration district which Superintendent Leo Jensen says may boost voter turnout.
