Voters will decide on a 17.78 mill tax levy for 76-77, a renewal plus 4 new mills. Board discusses potential program cuts if the measure fails, including sports, music, field trips, staff layoffs, and scaled services.
Saline's 1976 77 operating budget is balanced at 2 282 253 dollars beginning July 1 1976. The public can review the 55 page plan at City Hall this week with a public hearing set for May 24. Mayor George Anderson notes the budget holds at 10 mills and avoids employee layoffs with trimmed capital projects and a single 25 000 paving and lighting upgrade for City Hall.
James Berger served Milan's chief executive for a day as Saline hosts the Mayor for a Day kickoff. Bill King swore in Berger at City Hall with guests including Mike Strait Clyde Wellwood James Levlett Dick Cole Karlen Cole Millard Phillips Tom Preston Jeanne Brososky Mary Hess Connie Strait and others touring Saline.
City Attorney Grossman sees little risk of a lawsuit as Saline ends Rogers contract for coordinating Bicentennial events. Rogers agrees to stop services and meet for settlement. Saline may still pursue fireworks and a four community commemorative booklet with WWBC, pending outcome of talks.
Saline police report multiple incidents in the past week. A depot at 402 N Ann Arbor St was broken into on May 18 with no items missing after a routine check. A vandalized tennis net at People's Park caused $200 in damage on May 13. A club at Union School allegedly possessed explosives. police interviewed youths. A 550 pound landscape rake from Saline High School’s automotive shop connected to the FFA was stolen. Two youths stole candy worth $30.87 from a local store. no arrests. The department logged about 140 runs, including 17 traffic arrests and 7 juvenile-related cases.
Poppy sellers will patrol downtown Saline, shopping centers, and industrial plant gates for three days to sell bright red poppies. The funds aid hospitalized veterans and their families, produced by disabled veterans and volunteers from the Legion and Auxiliary. Melinda invites Salinians to help a buddy buy a poppy.
Saline Jaycees call on residents with ideas but few resources to attend an open input meeting May 26 at 8 30 p m in the old Council Chambers upstairs from Police Headquarters on Ann Arbor Street. Members will listen and take notes as they plan projects for the coming year. Vandalism in Saline puzzle city officials after theft and destruction of tennis nets at People's Park on Monroe Street with some insurance coverage noted.
