Saline Board of Review OKs Independent Appraisal Firm

Saline Board of Review approved employing an independent appraisal firm under two conditions. It has no objection to the appraisal but will sign a completion certificate after the rolls are totaled and reported. City Administrator Mike Strait estimated the cost at 10 000 to 15 000 with council support lacking for full adoption.

Doctors Move and Move Again Amid Vietnam War

Half the town’s doctors are relocating due to the war. Dr Ray Clark returns from Army leave to move family to 133 Nichols Dr and heads to San Francisco by April 10 for Vietnam service. Dr Glenn Groustra seeks new housing as Dr Eugene Garrison returns from service to reclaim his home. Dr Garrison, discharged soon, plans to resume practice in Saline around April 15. Dr Wilbur Vander Yacht will move his office in mid April to 104 W Michigan Ave while staying put at Davenport St for home.

School Parents Associations Plan Upcoming Elections Carnival

Officers will be elected and plans for the annual School Carnival will be completed at a meeting of the Elementary School Parents Association at 8 p.m. Monday April 10 at Jensen School. The Junior High Parents Association will hold a business meeting at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the school.

An extremely light turnout is forecast for Monday's probate judge special election. Absentee ballots are not out in Saline City or nearby townships, with Saline Township also voting on a utility franchise. Saline Fire Department was dispatched at 2 p.m. Wednesday to contain a large grass fire along the edge of the US 23 expressway between Bemis Road and US 12. Local units remained on scene for about thirty minutes before clearing.

Rolling Meadows Residents Fight Townhouse Zoning

More than 50 residents packed the Rolling Meadows meeting room to oppose a zoning change from R-1-A single family to R-3-A townhouses on 15.6 acres in Rolling Meadows 6. A petition with 216 signatures from Harper Tower and Nichols drives residents argued that increased density would raise health and safety hazards and contradict current zoning.

Smorgasbord Set Next Week at St. Pauls

Ford Plant Layoffs Rise Across Local Facilities

An additional 15 Ford plant workers will be laid off at the end of the last shift on Friday, bringing total layoffs to 105 here. Other area plants face rising numbers with a short work-week from auto industry cutbacks. Saline operates partially on Fridays, about 700 affected. Rawsonville Ypsilanti and Plymouth layoffs last week exceeded 700 and are expected to grow. Only low seniority workers are idled.

Thieves Break Into Vescio’s Market Missing Cash and Goods

Police report two or more suspects broke in through a roof vent at Vescio’s Country Market between 9:30 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 a.m. Sunday. They rifled the office, forced open a strong box, and stole 550 dollars in cash along with hams and cartons of cigarettes. doors were found open at 6:30 p.m. Sunday after an earlier check at 4:30 a.m. The inventory is not yet complete.

Saline School District approves high school bond vote

Saline voters approve a 6.319 million bond for a new high school with 1,128 ballots cast. The natatorium proposal failed by 65 votes, 612 to 505, while the pool portion was not included in the approved plan. The project aims for 1,200 students with core facilities and could be ready by September 1969.

Ypsilanti Savings to Build Saline Branch Office

Ypsilanti Savings and Loan announces plans for a Saline branch on East Michigan Avenue by year end. The 7 year old association has purchased homes at 179 and 181 East Michigan for the site. Executive McAndrew notes aims to finance local home building and integrate with Saline’s growth. Clearing expected by late May with a 2000 square foot early American style building, drive in window, front and rear entrances, and a back parking lot for easy access.
