6th Graders Battle Blaze With Shovels

Sixth graders at Houghton Elementary battled a field fire sparked by a garbage burner near the school. About 14 students and a janitor used wet brooms and shovels to halt the blaze as wind pushed it toward the Edison plant before firefighters arrived and cleared the flames.

Saline Woman's Club Plans Kellogg Plant Trip

The Saline Woman's Club will meet in Battle Creek at the Kellogg plant for their regular gathering. A chartered bus departs St. Paul United Church of Christ at 10 am and returns to Saline about 4 pm. Luncheon reservations are made at the Kellogg employees' cafeteria.

Exits Win Battle of the Bands in Ann Arbor

The Exits won the area Battle of the Bands Saturday night in Ann Arbor as about 600 fans braved heavy rain. Members include Steve Phillips and Bill Mitchell of Ann Arbor High, and Ron Westlake of Willow Run High. They earned $100 and advance to a state contest in Grand Rapids on April 29 with Saline Jaycees funding the event.

Card party to aid Loch Rio scholarships and girls' home

Saline Girls Attend Cenfab on Conservation

Two Future Homemakers members of Saline attended the Michigan Youth Conference on conservation at Michigan State University March 11. Sharon Burkhardt and Bobbi Politz joined about 400 youths as Waldo Gray of Detroit urged action programs in communities. Youth agencies sponsoring the event included 4-H, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, FFA, Camp Fire Girls, YWCA, YMCA, Boys' Clubs, and Red Cross Youth.

Saline Township Votes Unanimous on Edison Franchise

Saline Township approved the Detroit Edison utility franchise by a 46 to 0 vote in a Monday election. The Probate Judge race saw Ross Campbell defeat Rodney Hutchinson 38 to 8. Voter turnout was light overall with 113 in Saline city, 128 in York, 188 in Pittsfield, and 56 in Lodi Township.

City Council Raises Overtime Parking Fines

City council instructed the city attorney to draft an amendment increasing overtime parking fines from 25 cents to 1 dollar for the first day and from 1 dollar to 2 dollars for additional time.

Bids for Saline's new fire hall ranged above estimates with the lowest at 55 400 or 11 42 per square foot. The 90 000 bond will cover site work and land, with surrounding townships paying 49 percent through a rental plan.
