Saline voters to decide on 6.3M high school bond

A heavy snowstorm reduced attendance at a public meeting on Saline School District plans. Voters will decide 6 319 000 for a new high school and remodeling, plus 580 000 for a natatorium. Polls open 7 am to 8 pm at Saline Junior High. Free taxi and babysitting offered.

Saline High School Band earned a second division rating for the first time since 1961, described as excellent by director David Walter. The Junior High Band, directed by Malcolm Danforth, achieved straight ones from four judges, praised for discipline and mature sound.

Saline Dairy Banquet crowns county princess and awards

Cynthia Niehaus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Niehaus of Fletcher Road Chelsea, was named county Dairy Princess at the Saline High School banquet. Runners up were Judy McCalla and Barbara Kemner, with prizes of 25 15 and 10 dollars. Several 4-H dairy awards and medals were presented to 417 attendees. The event featured Shirley Finkbeiner and Philip Gordon as awardees, and Bud Guest provided entertainment.

Ford Plant Layoffs Continue Across Area

Layoffs at the Ford Saline line plant total 90 with about 700 of 1 000 workers affected by a short work week. Nearby plants idle include 175 at Rawsonville, 236 at Ypsilanti, and 51 at Plymouth. Ford cites indefinite duration and low seniority as reasons.

Five Saline Students Shine at District Forensics Meet

Five Saline High School students coached by Mary Sue Wahl earned top honors at the district forensics contest in Chelsea and will compete regionally in Battle Creek on April 12. Robert Dieterle won first in original oratory. Noreen Ferris and Beth Volz took second in declamation and humorous readings respectively. Marjorie Quick won first in extemporaneous speaking in the girls division, while Greg Leidheiser was second in extemporaneous speaking in the boys division.

Scout Troop 446 Weekend at Camp Newkirk

Thirty five boys and seven leaders from Boy Scout Troop 446 spent the weekend at Camp Newkirk, leaving Friday night and returning Sunday morning. They hiked five miles and completed stalking trailing, a map and compass course, and star study with all cooking done outdoors.

Saline Board of Review Hears 49 Taxpayer Appeals

Saline's total assessed and equalized valuation rises to about 27.5 million dollars, boosted by the Ford plant and new housing. The Board heard 42 appeals this year, with 20 filed in person, and will meet in closed session Friday and as needed to finish determinations.

Saline 4-H horse judging winners named in county finals

Saline youngsters swept the Washtenaw County 4-H horse judging finals at Rural Activities Center. Linda Lloyd won senior trophy with Diana Holden and Denise Stowe as alternates. juniors from Saline led by Bonnie Feldkamp and Bonnie Beach with Linda Russell as second alternate. City council and board receive advisory tax petitions
