Old Idea Still Good Council Considers Flood Damage Liability

City officials weigh liability if the dam is rebuilt after last year’s failure. City Attorney Allan Grossman warns due care is required and improper construction could trigger damages downstream. Engineer Craigmile cites known costs from the June 1968 flood for planning, with a $174 000 bond plan to rebuild the dam or abandon it, possibly funded over 10 years without higher taxes.

Jim Bradley Named New Saline High Varsity Coach

Jim Bradley was elevated to Saline High School varsity basketball coach replacing Don Jaeger who had led the team for 12 years. Bradley, a Saline district educator since 1964, previously headed junior varsity and directed the School Cooperative Work Program serving 52 students. Jaeger, with 11% raise last year totaling 1265 dollars, has taught 12 years and coached 12 seasons. his replacement was decided by the Board after public support had previously favored him.

Teachers Gain Higher Degrees At EMU And Michigan

Six Saline school system teachers will earn advanced degrees this summer. Jean Fick from Jensen School will get a master’s in guidance and counselling from EMU. Stephanie Clar of Houghton School and Cammie Martin of Jensen School will complete master’s degrees at U Michigan. Jeff D Atri has 30 hours beyond a master’s in counselling and guidance. Donna VanRaporst and Jim Roth at high schools will also earn EMU master’s degrees.

A 1944 SHS reunion is planned for Sunday afternoon at the home of Mr and Mrs Gerald Graf 3321 Waterworks Rd with a pot luck dinner at 1 p.m.

Whitehead earns degree in special education at EMU

Clyde Whitehead, a student teacher at Houghton Elementary School, received his degree in special education at Eastern Michigan University commencement. Mrs. Whitehead, former head nurse at Ypsilanti State Hospital, recently resigned to expand their family which already includes son Jeffrey, 434. The Whiteheads reside at 165 Harper Dr.

Second Millage Vote Set Negotiations Continue

Clinton soldier Lt. Duane Landwehr, killed in Viet Nam on June 6, was the town’s second war fatality. Survived by wife Frances Reecks and son Michael, he lived in Tecumseh and was buried in Reynolds Corner Cemetery. A July 238 millage vote was scheduled. school negotiations continue with SEA and board, amid rising salary costs and six teachers receiving master’s-based raises. Another negotiating session is planned Tuesday evening.

Regents Confirm U M Degrees for 5200 Graduates

University of Michigan regents confirmed about 5 200 degrees across 17 colleges and schools during May commencements. Nine Saline area residents earned bachelor, master or engineering degrees including James William Adams and William Allan Burdick in math, Gary Carlson in Far Eastern languages, John Hanson in aerospace engineering, Linda Heiserman in German, Janice Kemp in English, Bruce Vineland in electrical engineering, Kathleen Zeichman in pre law, and James Densel in history.

Junior Champ Meet Postponed By Rain At Saline High

The Jaycee Junior Champ track and field meet, moved from June 14 to June 21 at Saline High School, will run all events with 152 local youths competing. Mayor Hugh Keveling will light the torch to start the meet, and senior winners advance to the State Jaycee Junior Champ meet in Detroit on July 19 and 20.

Cancer Drive Doubles Previous Local Campaign Total

The 1969 Cancer Drive, begun in April, has more than doubled prior campaigns in the area. Donations reach $487 so far, with many contributions still arriving by mail. Mrs. Charles Deasy, chairman, thanks Saline residents. Troop 440 Girl Scouts assisted with envelope addressing, and help came from Mrs. Robert Estes and Mrs. William Crim Jr.

Flagpole Dedicated at Hoover plant in Manchester

A new flagpole and a used banner were dedicated June 7 at the Hoover Ball and Bearing Co. plant in Manchester US. Rep. Marvin Esch presented the flag flown over the Capitol to Manchester Legion members, who then handed it to Hoover executives.
