School Board Sets Public Budget Hearing Date
The Board of Education approved a public hearing on the coming year’s budget for Wednesday, July 22. At the June 10 meeting they authorized purchasing two 66 passenger buses for 13 400, subject to bus body changes after inspections. They also approved stage curtains for the Intermediate School, summer recreation use of facilities, and calcium chloride for dust control in the parking lot. The board seeks a new superintendent after Leo Jensen’s retirement, with five applicants interviewed and 30 to 40 more received. The reorganizational meeting will occur shortly after July 1.

Elm Giant Falls to Dutch Elm Disease in Michigan
A state record elm measuring about 20 feet in trunk diameter has been destroyed by Dutch elm disease after being healthy last year. Workmen on McKay Street report brittle diseased limbs and plan to burn the lumber, which could build two to three houses. The fallen tree, once 244 inches around, stood 108 feet high with a 132 foot spread. A nearby Curtiss Park elm remains healthy, though similarly large. The city has long sprayed trees to combat the disease.
