Elementary School Gets New Name

During Commencement, Saline Elementary School was renamed Leo L. Jensen Elementary School by a unanimous school board decision to honor retiring Superintendent Leo Jensen after 21 years in the post. Jensen and his family plan to move to Florida in July.

Gas strike suspected in Crestwood Knolls complaints

Police investigated multiple reports of gas odor and turned off meters Sunday amid a strike by about 2 000 Consolidated Gas Co employees in the Detroit Ann Arbor area. Registration Open for Saline Library Summer Programs

Saline Public Library reports brisk registrations for preschool and 6 to 13 programs while a book discussion for ages 14 to 19 is slower but still open. The discussion, led by Myron Shaw, runs 7 to 9 from every other Tuesday, with A Separate Piece and The Status Seekers among choices.

Two Numbers to Reach Saline Police at Any Hour

Saline citizens can contact the Saline Police Depart ment at any time with two numbers. Days 8 am to 5 pm 429 7000 Nights 5 pm to 8 am Normandy 2 2505 connects to the Washtenaw Sheriff's Department which will relay to the on duty Saline officer. Both numbers are listed in Page 1 of the phone book.

Still Receives Appointment To Annapolis

Robert Still son of Mr and Mrs Leonard Z Still has received an appointment as Midshipman at the U S Naval Academy Annapolis Md It is the first such appointment either to Annapolis or West Point ever received by a Saline man He reports June 30 after graduating CMA with rank of M Sgt and a Merit Certificate He held first chair French horn in CMA Band earned a $100 scholarship and served as class editor of Recall He was active in CMA Glee Club Choral Octet and a charter member of the Hi Y Club.

Saline Opens Sauk Trail Art Gallery With Local Artists

Saline debuts its first city art gallery the Sauk Trail Art Gallery at the Sauk Trail Inn. Open weekends this summer the show features artists including George Davis Phyllis Douthat Nancy Gronemeyer Taylor Lee Jacobsen and Victoria Labay along with Albredo Romero and Lou Whitton. The opening includes oil water color and charcoal works with future shows planned in ceramics and sculpture.

Meha Board Members Tour City in Saline

Meha board of governors will visit Saline on Friday June 19 for a meeting called by Stephen S Nisbet chairman of the Founding Fund. After an 8 30 breakfast in the High School all purpose room the group will tour the city. Mayor Jack Bennett will conduct the tour.

Saline Little League Opens 1964 Season With Close Games

Saline youth baseball began its 1964 season Monday night with two tight games. In the American League the Indians and Tigers tied 1-1 as Dennis Malinczak tripled and Ron Wahl doubled in the first, while Dale Bishop and Lance Belleau pitched. The Braves defeated the Phillies 6-5 in the National League opener. Babe Ruth league play starts next week along with Ann Arbor High School League under coaches Doc Leidheiser and Dallas Garrett.

Band Shell Planned for Henne Field by Fair Board

At the Sa line Community Fair Board meeting on Monday How ard Kuhl proposed a permanent band shell for Henne Field. The design by Kuhl would seat 90 to 100 spectators and provide a permanent stage for concerts and Community Fair programs. Estimated cost is 5368 dollars with a planned summer build aided by local groups. The board pledged 1250 dollars, about one fourth of the cost. Also, the board set a dead weight basis for the 1964 tractor pulling contest with five entry classes.

Nobody Attends City Budget Hearing

A public hearing on the coming year’s city budget opened at City Hall but adjourned due to no public attendance. The session had been advertised and the budget was available for inspection. Jaycee Auxiliary members plan a 6:30 p.m. dinner at Weber’s on Monday June 15 followed by a business meeting at Mrs. Jameson Ford’s home.

Summer Recreation Schedule Details for June to August

The schedule lists swimming at the Y M C A on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays with buses from the Intermediate School at 12 30 and 1 30 pm for non swimmers and 20 cent fee. Swims at Wamplers Lake on Tuesdays and Thursdays with buses at 12 30 pm for swimmers only 20 cent fee. Girls softball and arts crafts run after swimming at 3 15 pm on weekdays with no fee for softball and a 10 cent periodical fee for crafts. Registration is Friday June 19 at the Intermediate School 9 am to 4 pm with a 25 cent fee and late registration allowed. Age minimum may be 7 or 8. details to follow in Reporter.

Hamster Bite Sends Family Aboard Rabies Test

Mr and Mrs John Erskine of 704 Knollwood Ct await a Lansing report on their daughter Cindy 8 who was bitten Monday June 1 by a hamster owned by friends. The hamster died the next day and its remains were sent to Lansing for rabies testing on June 4.

Finnish girl to spend year with Salinians

Kristina Rydman a 17 year old Helsinki resident will spend a year in Saline under the Youth for Understanding program. She will live with the Frank Brittain family on Pond View Drive and attend Saline High School as a senior next year. Kristina hopes to study nursing or pharmacy after returning to Finland and has focused on languages in high school. Her interest in America began after a Detroit boy stayed with her family in 1959.
