Petitions Fail to Save Mills House From Demolition
About 700 signatures were presented to the American Legion Home Association to save the Mills house built in 1833, but Legion President John Lake said the petitions did not alter plans to demolish the structure within two weeks. The Saline Area Historical Society led the effort with Mrs. Martin Vila and Mrs. Barry Van Koevering, while most signers were local residents. The house, on land willed to the Legion by Vesta Mills, would be moved only if offered to the Historical Society, but the Legion intends expansion and has already awarded a demolition contract.

Negotiations Stall Over Semantics in Saline Contract Talks
Teachers and Board of Education negotiators remain at an impasse after three meetings over the Saline district master contract for 1967 68. The dispute centers on the phrase quality education for the children of the Saline area with SEA favoring its inclusion verbatim while the board seeks wording tied to the districts financial resources. Proposals include base salaries rising to 7500 with 10500 in five years and 13875 with masters degrees in eight years, plus higher costs for fringe benefits and reduced class sizes. The panel has not yet addressed raises and fringe benefits.

City Budget Approved With One Dissenting Vote
The 1967 68 city budget totaling 576 037 was approved by the council with one dissenting vote from Councilman Donald Jaeger who opposed the 9 mill tax and a five percent pay raise for city workers beginning January. He urged faster retirement pay and warned against tax cuts. Mayor George Johnson praised the budget as prudent, noting funds for City Hall purchase, fire hall bond payments, a new fire truck, and scaled back street improvements due to cost. The summer plan includes grading and seaboat work, with an initial street needs estimate of 100 000, final budget 59 032. Continued on page 4A.
