Saline City appoints Elwin A Strait to lead WWTP project

The Saline City Council designates City Administrator Elwin A Strait to a temporary special assignment starting July 6 1971 focusing on the waste water treatment plant expansion and related lines. The project exceeds 1 million dollars with bonds and grants and Strait will balance 70 percent on the assignment while city departments report to the Council as workload allows.

Saline Community Center Seeks Youth and Adult Volunteers

Saline invites youths and parents to volunteer for clean up and supervision at the former St Andrews Church building now Saline Community Center. A July 24 dance is planned and chaperones are needed to open the facility on weeknights. Call Wayne Quick at 429-4330 for details. Saline Invitational Softball Tourney Upsets Shine All Weekend

Thousands watched the Second Annual Saline Invitational as four Saline teams fought for the trophy. Golden Standard beat Roby twice in the final round to claim the title. Ed Kronemeyer earned most valuable player honors after a dominant 36 inning pitching performance. Donnie Drake of Fireside Lounge hit Saline’s lone homer. Local crops show a comeback with knee high by July and corn two inches taller than expected. Mayor Hubert Beach opens a daily office hour at City Hall to address residents.

Saline Volunteer Firemen Respond to Three Blazes

Saline Volunteer Fire Department responded Wednesday to three fires including two grass fires on Maple Road and near N Harris and Bassett and a car fire at Ray's Auto Service all extinguished quickly. They also responded to two earlier grass fires this week, one Saturday and one Monday.

Checks Mailed to Michigan Farmers in 1971 Programs

Preliminary payments for the 1971 wheat and feed grain programs are being released to Michigan farmers. By July 1, more than 37 000 payments totaling nearly 16 million dollars had been processed to reimburse costs of idling productive cropland and maintaining it in a conserving manner.
