Farmers report excellent wheat prospects and a solid corn harvest while warning signs rise from the cereal leaf beetle. Quarantines limit shipping and growers consider treatments to prevent spread, with counties like Berrien Cass Jackson and Hillsdale already affected.
Saline increased its prep league record with a 6 3 win over the Ann Arbor Elks at West Park. Dick Leidheiser hit a three run homer to move Saline ahead 5 3 in the fifth with support from Jim Griffin and Steve Miller on base. Ron Tucker relieved Doug Robinet and struck out eight Elks.
In American League action the White Sox and Tigers split results with the White Sox beating the Tigers 11-5 and holding first place. In the National League the Phillies routed the Pirates 24-1 as Gerald Seeger earned the win, while the Cardinals toppled the Dodgers 12-8 and then lost to the Braves 12-8. Tiger pitcher Dale Bishop starred with 12 strikeouts in a strong showing against the Indians.
Howard Smith of Vista California and his sister Mrs Ar ther Jacobsen of Textile Road had a one hour reunion Wednesday morning after a 30 year absence. Smith, who was visiting a daughter in Rhode Island, stopped in Saline on his way back to California. Jacobsen said she would have recognized him in a crowd despite changes in appearance.
The Saline area hosts a busy Fourth of July with Jim Levietts guests at Portage Lake and multiple family gatherings. Attendees include the Bohnetts Guenthers Hellers Kueblers and several relatives. Bonni e Youngs celebrates upcoming nuptials with pre wedding parties while residents visit hospitals and attend graduations.
Jaycees defeated Hoover 10 to 5 and Community Ford beat A and M Chevrolet 12 to 4 in Tuesday’s softball action.
Barbara Hehr daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Hehr will be among 80 band students in a woodwind and percussion ensemble at the University of Michigan Band Directors Conference July 14 19 She earned the spot after two weeks at Interlochen with the All State Band on a U M scholarship where 244 Michigan high school students participated The group was directed by Harry Begian Cass Tech Detroit She returned home Sunday from Interlochen.
Fredericka McBride, a Saline resident, will celebrate her 102nd birthday Sunday, July 14. She now resides in Washtenaw County hospital in Ann Arbor and may receive birthday cards addressed to the hospital care. Reverend George Laurent and Mrs. John Dicks visit her and say she would appreciate the cards.
Sue Washburn of Saline is among 25 Michigan Future Homemakers of America delegates joining about 1,500 others in Kansas City Missouri for the National FHA meeting July 8 11 The event draws members from all states Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to discuss Stay in School Activities Focus on Family Friendship and Citizenship in Action with speakers including Stewart Udall and Carolyn Black Davis.
Kathie Reed, 1963 Saline High graduate, guests of 400 boys at Repton School in England and tours with the Michigan Chorale share impressions and travel notes as they perform in Europe. The letter describes tour life, language quirks, and encores while outlining upcoming concert dates and experiences abroad.
Hoover Ball and Bearing announces Blake J Mohney as director of labor relations a corporate level post. Mohney previously served as assistant director of industrial relations and personnel director for the bearing division before joining the staff level assignment. He later led Adrian division personnel and served as FBI special agent earlier in his career.
The annual Ypsilanti State Hospital Patients Carnival has been scheduled for August 2022.
DPW head Mike Strait reports the Saline river level has fallen slightly but city wells cover demand. Water mains pressure holds as residents cut evening use. Two artesian wells meet needs. third well expected by late August to boost safety. River level near typical mid August.
The 1963 64 Community Calendar, sponsored by the Band Parents Club, will list 2307 birthdays anniversaries and meeting dates with 26 organizations and 18 advertisers. Sales rise with 900 subscribers. calendars arrive late August or early September. The Saline High Band trip to Interlochen is August 19 26 with calendar support. The band marched in the July Fourth parade and will join Clinton 125th Anniversary events July 20.
Frank Karns and his wife honor guests at an open house Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. in Milan to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They lived in Saline before moving to Milan. 12 grandchildren and five children help host.
The Saline planning commission and Pittsfield township officials will meet July 30 at City Hall to explore a long range industrial corridor plan. They consider zoning changes, land drainage needs, and the impact on growth, with a 1980 population projection of 4,780 for Saline.
Robert Maurer former administrator of Saline Community Hospital and assistant administrator of Lincoln Hospital Detroit was appointed a member of the Health Insurance Council Hospital Relations Committee for the coming year. He received notice from the executive director of the Greater Detroit Area Hospital Council Inc. Maurer resides at 56 Tower Dr Saline.
