Volunteers at the Dug-Out hosted a March of Dimes benefit breakfast on Sunday. The event surpassed last year by raising 222.35 for the 1970 campaign while serving meals to delighted customers. Paul Woods led the effort with Romeo Troga donating kitchen talents plus others helping.
A series of coffee hours and a bake sale raise funds for the March of Dimes in Saline. The bake sale is sponsored by the Jaycee Auxiliary and will be at Wight Cleaners. Events include coffee hours hosted at several local homes and other recent contributions totaling 277 dollars.
At Mon days meeting the First Savings Association voted to raise savings certificate rates up to 6 percent. The 1969 annual report showed savings deposits rise 8.4 percent and the first mortgage portfolio up 4.8 percent. Officers were re elected: Jerome A. Lamb chair Atwood R. McAndrew Jr president Clark M. Greenstreet VP H Frederick Shaefer Jr sec treas LeRoy E Rutherford asst VP Frances K. Hixson asst sec treas. directors re elected including Robert H. Estes and William F. Delhey Saline for three year terms.
Matt Katalinich was named coordinator of Operation Drug Alert by Kiwanis District Lt Governor Walter Henne at the Saline Kiwanis meeting. The effort involves Kiwanis clubs statewide to warn communities about rising drug use. A W. J. Maxey Training School film will be shown at the next meeting, 6:30 p.m., Monday at Still's Restaurant.
Saline Savings Bank announced higher interest rates effective Feb 1 for time savings. CDs with 90 days, 5.00 percent, 90 day auto renewals, one year at 5.50 percent, two year at 5.75 percent. Passbook savings now 4 percent. Bank re elected all officers and directors at last week’s annual meeting.
Miss Woods recently returned from a Peace Corps tour will speak and show slides about Africa at the Wonjiens Fellowship meeting of St Pauls United Church of Christ. The program is scheduled for Tuesday evening with visitors welcome.
Saline Community Hospital reports a first ever net positive balance as of Sept 30 1969 with assets rising to 574 682 and a surplus of 56 698 tied to higher occupancy and outpatient use. Treasurer Bredernitz notes retroactive changes and IRS funding support from the United Fund and Hospital Auxiliary. Board officers were re-elected and praised administrators physicians and staff for improved operations.
The Citizens Bank of Saline announced higher savings rates effective February 1 with passbook accounts at 4 percent and term deposits 500 dollars and up at 5 percent annually, with tiered variations. Officers re elected include H A Holmes chairman H W Kuebler president Francis N Lockwood cashier and D W Jeppesen assistant cashier. Directors listed are Gerald O Bahnmiller Webb S Harwood Holmes Kuebler Lockwood Arthur J Lutz Dr Gordon J Prout Stanton G Rodsch Carl F Schrandt and Clifford H Simmons.
The next regular meeting of City Council is scheduled for 7 30 p m Monday in the council chamber.
Area farmers protest rising assessments linked to a county study aimed at 50 percent of true market value. Meetings set in York and Pittsfield townships to form a taxpayers group and discuss withholding taxes if needed.
Four Saline High School seniors with two alternates will appear on the televised High School Bowl on Feb. 7. The program taped Feb. 6 and to be aired Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. on WWJ TV channel 4, with a replay Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. on channel 56. Contestants include Barbara Weber Cheryl Mayer Dave Houdek and Richard Moser with alternates Mike Hintz Alyce Krivisky.
The Houghton PTO board approves spending about 1600 from carnival proceeds on items for the school including an overhead projector backstop bases balls bats tetherball game and playground swings plus a planetarium globe. A 150 library donation and 15 per teacher for classroom materials are also allotted.
Roger A. Phelps age 20 son of Mr and Mrs Allyn H Phelps of Saline Michigan has been promoted to Army specialist five while serving as receiving section chief in the 604th Combat Support Maintenance Company near Long Binh Vietnam.
Saline High School won the top team honor at a district forensics competition in Chelsea. Salinians placed second in their local league behind Grosse Ile High School among eight schools. Dal Queenan and Mike Hintz led the affirmative with undefeated status and three district wins, while Alyce Krivsky and Noreen Ferris debated the negative and claimed two wins. Dal earned "first speaker" ratings three times, Noreen twice.
Friendly residents of Old Creek Farms cooperated to create a neighborhood skating spot for children who cannot walk to the city rink. Families include J. Philip and Betty Smith with Lisa and Gary, Frank and Triss Zupi with four children, Richard and Mary Jo Nehring with Dawn Denise and Michelle, and Marvin and Marian Dawn with Gerry. Thaw slows use as area rinks close.
