Saline Library Schleh building remodel makes progress

Dick Cole reports the Schleh building remodel for the Saline Library is progressing with six weeks to two months planned for move. Volunteers from the library board Alfred and Ralph Gross and others donated plumbing wiring insulation and plastering work while professionals and students contribute. Heating cooling installed carpets arriving but not yet laid and safety woodwork finished by local volunteers. Cole remains confident the project will continue smoothly.

Resident fears erosion claim over Curtiss Park tree removals

Mrs. John Knight, Sr. told City Council erosion concerns tied to tree removals in Curtiss Park. She cited dozens of cut stumps from small to large trees, questioned removal of rare walnuts, and urged future tree-cutting guidelines to protect soil and wildlife.

Lodi zoning request seeks mobile home park at Ellsworth Zeeb

Lodi Township has received an application to rezone 80 acres at the Ellsworth Zeeb corner from A-1 to C-1 to permit a mobile home park. A public hearing is set for 8 p.m. Friday March 7 at Lodi Township hall. The proposal, from Sheldon Futernick of Plymouth, cites a development similar to the Warren Avenue project in Canton Township and invites board members to tour the site prior to the hearing.

Saline March of Dimes Near $3000 Goal

With reports still arriving the Saline March of Dimes total nears $3000 at $2791.53. A high school student dance after Friday’s basketball game will raise funds at the gym admission 50 cents. Donations include $925.41 from the Mothers March and various clubs, businesses and individuals totaling hundreds of dollars. Three $500 scholarships are offered by the county for Washte naw County high school students with a March 1 deadline, while public education films are available from Evelyn Sells of Ann Arbor as campaign director.

Flapjacks to Hire Scholarship Fund Supper Staged

Kiwanis Club hosts its Pancake Supper to aid the local scholarship fund. The event runs 5 30 to 7 30 pm Saturday at the High School with admission 125 for adults and 75 cents for children.

Saline Fire Department Responds to Four Weekend Calls

Saline Firemen were called out four times over the weekend. One call Saturday night was for a car fire on Parker Road near Pleasant Lake Road, and three more calls were for grass fires.

Baton Corps To Give Ist Performance

The Saline Baton Marching Corps will debut between halves of the varsity basketball game this Friday February 28. It comprises 160 youths aged 5 to 13 trained by the High School majorettes with adviser Mrs John C Michael of 1543 York Terrace. A dress rehearsal is set for 3 30 p m Saturday at the High School gym.

RMH Zoning Approved by City Council

City Council approved ordinance 209 adding RMH classification for residential mobile homes. It regulates trailer parks, provides licensing and inspection, and zones 11.6 acres on Maple Rd for RMH use.

Child Study Club Plans Husbands Night at UM Game

Members of the Child Study Club will attend a University of Michigan hockey game on Husbands Night Saturday. After the game they will return to the home of Mr and Mrs Barry Van Kovering.

Retired Pastor Receives a Gift from Trinity Lutheran

More than 400 members and friends of Trinity Lutheran Church honored Rev. H. L. Engel who retired after 42 years of service. A morning service featured speakers and a noon program at a local Junior High gym, where Engel and his family were presented with a home gift at 68 Tower Dr. The speakers included former congregation members and church leaders. Engel began ministry in 1926, served in Saline since 1939, and retired from Trinity Lutheran Church.

Factions Reach Accord On Russell Street Sidewalk War

After a decade of dispute over five hillside lots on Russell Street and its trees, four homeowners proposed a compromise to Mayor Hugh Keveling. The plan blends two sidewalk designs: uphill behind the trees with a curved set of steps down to the curb, looping around more trees.
