The High School releases its second marking period honor rolls across grades Freshman Sophomore Junior and Senior. Names span A and A minus top averages to B and B plus lists, with numerous students named for distinguished records.
More than a dozen Jaycees guided 31 underprivileged children through Christmas shopping Sunday at Walker's Department Store. The event included a party with the Jaycee Auxiliary at the Junior High, with gifts, wrapping help, and refreshments. Santa delivered presents, and participants expressed gratitude as the helpers distributed funds from the annual fruit cake sale to buy gifts for families.
Michigander Rachel Woods, from Saline, met midway around the world in the Philippines while serving in the Peace Corps. She attended a reception at the U.S. Embassy with President Ferdinand Marcos present and Governor G. Mennen Williams, now former ambassador. Woods studied at Eastern Michigan University and taught in Ohio before volunteering. She says helping blind children abroad was worth more than any U S salary, with more details due in next week's Reporter.
Local churches list Christmas Eve and holiday services across Saline area. Denominations include St. Andrew Catholic Church, First Baptist, Nazare ne, St Pauls United Church of Christ, Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross, First Presbyterian, First Methodist, Assembly of God Bemis Road, St Johns Lutheran, St James United Church of Christ, York Baptist, Bethel United Church of Christ, Trinity Lutheran, Faith Lutheran. Services feature multiple mass times, candlelight vigils, Sunday schools, and youth programs with dates and contact numbers.
Bob Russell says the ice rink warming shed is a very depressing mess as vandals again damage benches and boards. He notes most benches from the university and self built ones are broken while lime and junk clutter the floor and a paid on duty inside role is needed.
Saline Hornets beat Novi 69-53 behind Jerry Hill 20 points and 16 rebounds from Wyman Osterhout, with a season high 19 assists. They then lost 97-80 at Dundee as Don de Smith scored 37 and Larry Davis 23, while Rod White led Saline with 21.
Mary Goodwin led a group of local students and church members to construct a life size nativity scene for the United Methodist Church of Saline. Built at her home, the display uses chicken wire paper mache and cloth, with church volunteers supplying materials and hair. Plans exist to add shepherds sheep and a donkey next year, and to place the kings later after proper research.
City assessor Dick Cole and building official Hugh Princeé with an assistant have started residential visits in parts of the city to adjust assessments ahead of March Board of Review meetings. They carry photo ID and request entry to speed the study.
