The Saline school system announces thirty four new teachers joining the staff for the 1963 70 term. At the High School Lawrence M Winchell will teach industrial arts and Esther C Valvanis becomes librarian. Other postings include Lynn Bohmer Spanish Mervin Ward Jr biology Douglas Degner history and science Jean Hutt social studies Ruth Smith physical education and several junior high and elementary specialists. Librarian duties and multiple 6th grade assignments are noted for Houghton and surrounding schools with graduates from WMU U M University of Michigan and Wayne State among them.
A Saline school district labor dispute enters a public fact-finding hearing Thursday led by Leon Herman of Southfield. The session, starting at 10 am, may be open to the public and press, with final openness decided on site.
Two small children started a blaze at the Ray and Riggs farm near Wil low and Mooreville Rd. destroying a 40 by 80 foot barn and a smaller shed. Firefighters from Saline Milan and Augusta Township fought the flames, pouring about 20 000 gallons of water, with no livestock or equipment losses reported. Raymond Riggs, hospitalized for abdominal surgery, was notified of the fire that night. The farm later sparked a smoldering hay grass fire, quickly contained, and there were additional calls for a garage and a car fire in the area.
