Saline Area Schools Board approves changes to high school attendance policy and daily schedule. Abolishes written excuses, introduces activity period, expands counselor conferences, and sets a 12 absence threshold for possible action. Extended to middle school likely.
City Council votes five of nine land rezoning requests amid controversy over legality and planning. Salvation is debated on properties along Michigan Monroe and Henry streets, with residents and officials citing traffic density and population growth as key factors.
In a special session the council voted to start advertising bids for the millpond reconstruction with contract award contingent on securing grant funds. Bids will be opened September 27. Milton Barnett of Whit tier Construction asked again for two occupancy permits in Old Creek Farms No 2 and Mayor Beach approved permits on the Easthbelt line for properties already with building permits.
Saline School District must compensate Anthony Eugenio Inc. 65000 after a ruling by Washtenaw County Circuit Court in a dispute over a painting contract for the High School. The district may seek reimbursement from architect Guido A. Binda and Spence Brothers. A payment plan may use Building and Site funds and future tax revenues to cover the debt. The Saline Public Library will close for inventory Aug 30 31 and Sept 1.
The Saline Jaycees announce the annual Miss Saline contest open to single females 16 to 25 from the Saline Area School District. Entrants meet judges at a tea on Sept 5, followed by a Leutheuser dinner and the crowning at the fair on Sept 7. Entries due by Aug 31 with mail to Jim Fliss, 266 Clark St.
