Permit Requirement Tightened for Grass Burns
Fire Chief Harold Armbruster warned of strict action against anyone burning grass swamps or brush without a permit and urged proper trash burning only in covered containers. He noted 21 grass fires in two months due to dry conditions and said noncompliant setters will be referred to the Conservation department for possible prosecution. Permits are issued by Armbruster.

Saline High Band to Perform at State Festival in Mason

Miss Lola Dell announces winners of the annual Poppy Poster contest by the American Legion Auxiliary. Diana Johnson wins first in Class II with Charles Still and Dennis McCormick taking second and third. Judy Lehmann tops Class TIT with Mary Schumacher and Howard Schrader as runners-up. Class I had no entries. 125 posters entered. Judges were Mrs Ruden z Douthat Allan Grossman and Dr Fulton Taylor. First place entries advance to district contest.

Grass Fires Keep Firemen on Run
Saline firemen battled a wave of grass and swamp fires this week totaling 11 calls. A 1950 car owned by Roger Lange was destroyed by flames in the High School parking lot, with heat melting the roof. Fire crews responded once on Thursday, twice on Friday, once on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, and twice on Tuesday, with three more reports by Wednesday at press time.

Saline once housed a 1890s race track and driving club
Saline residents recall a half mile track built in 1893 near Milan road under Eugene Helber. The Saline Driving Club formed May 8 1893 with A Hauser as president and F D Ford as VP. Races ran Sundays and a matinee June 10 drew local owners like Anson Harmon and Irving Vercelius trained horses. The track faded from memory after land sales to S M Bixby and William H Barr.

Saline police arrest UM student in child lure case
An 18 year old University of Michigan student, William Alderisio of Birmingham, was arrested after local children described a man trying to lure them into a blue car. Police traced the license number, and Alderisio was arraigned on three counts and held on bond.
