A Saturday cellar blaze at 6914 Saline-Ann Arbor Rd left the Stierle household with all clothing and furniture destroyed, though the house remained standing. Fire melted laundry appliances finishes and blocked entry for Kit Young, as smoke and water ruined a piano hi-fi set and other belongings. Neighbors and family aided efforts. cause undetermined but the home’s furnace and recreation areas were affected. No damage estimate yet.

Saline Hornets open spring with multiple victories
The Saline Hornets opened the spring season with wins in track and baseball. In Tecumseh, the Hornets won a triangular track meet 53 to 47 to 30 led by Ed Strait and Howard Schrader and the 880 relay. A second triangular meet at Ann Arbor ended Saline 48.4 to 47.9 over Chelsea with Rick Johnson and Schrader taking sprint titles and John Harvey leading the mile. Baseball beat Dexter 13-2 behind pitcher Ron Tucker and a ten-strikeout effort, while the junior varsity opened with an 8-0 win over Dexter IV under Larry Smith.

Levleit Named Chief of Police in Saline
James Levleit, long time Saline Police officer since 1955, was named Chief of Police by the City Council Monday night after serving as Acting Chief for three weeks. He is a 28 year old Saline High School graduate and Army veteran who joined as a part time officer in 1955 and became full time in 1956. He replaces Earl Kirby. A sheriff's letter asked Saline officers to attend a county training school. Police Commissioner Glenn Clark was told to notify the department.
