Saline Ford Plant Stoppage Halts 950 Jobs

The Saline Ford plant closed Wednesday idling 950 employees due to a lockout of Teamster union members across the country. Nationwide, Ford Motor Co layoffs reached about 12,000 with GM Chrysler and American Motors also trimming output as parts shortages and transportation bottlenecks hit assembly and parts plants. Some Saline workers were moved from Sandusky, and normal operations were expected to resume next Monday.

First Baptist Church to Hold Charter Service in Saline

The new First Baptist Church of Saline will hold its formal Charter Service Sunday at 3 p.m. in Saline High School’s all purpose room. About 25 to 30 people plan to become charter members as Rev. Merle R. Meeden presides with speakers from area churches and Michigan Baptist officials assisting.

Senior Citizens' Club May Be Started Here

Saline Woman's Club will discuss forming a Senior Citizens' Club on April 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the home economics room of the Junior High School. The discussion invites all with no age limits and officers will provide refreshments.

Methodist Mother-Daughter Banquet Planned

Mothers and daughters of the Methodist Church will hold a banquet at 6 30 p.m. Saturday April 22 at the High School. The program Progress in Music will be provided by Katy Esch. Women’s Physical Education Class Offered at High School

A women’s physical education class as part of the Adult Education Program at the high school will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and for nine more Thursdays. Enrollment remains open. Call the school superintendent’s office at 429-9260 or attend the class on Thursday. Art and bridge classes are also open for enrollment.

Saline High School students won top state honors at the Michigan Industrial Arts contest in Cobo Hall with first place house plans and models. Glenn Dieterle and Martin Feldkamp led Saline entries, alongside fellow students Neil Girbach Larry Jedele Brian Collins and others who placed in regional-to-state events.

Saline High room mothers chose new officers Tuesday night. Mrs. William Klapper becomes chairman, replacing Mrs. Joseph Craigmile. Co chairwoman is Mrs. Marvin Parker, succeeding Mrs. Douglas Hoeft. The group adopts Parent Teacher Organization as its name.

Saline High track team posted strong showings led by Art Haeussler who won the half mile in 2 0 7 8 minutes and by two other firsts in high jump and the 220.
