Owner Seeks Annexation of 101 Acres on Austin Road

J F Ferry of Detroit seeks city annexation of 101 acres on Austin Road in Saline Township, plus 25 acres already within the city along the Saline River. Ferry plans a development of finer homes comparable to the east side of the river, with the 101 acres re zoned to R 1 A upon inclusion.

Loon and Weather Oddities Roil Saline Area

Last week brought strange winds and loon sightings across Saline area. A grounded loon near 220 Monroe St startled residents while police reported a wind storm that toppled a shed and moved a trailer fourteen feet. Conservation officers relocated injured loons to nearby waters as residents recalled seen weather events and a 30,000 dollar barn damage.

City council raises overtime parking fines effective July 1 1967

The City Council increased overtime parking fines from 25 cents the first day and 1 dollar after to 1 dollar the first two days and 2 dollars thereafter to fund development and maintenance of parking facilities. The Chamber of Commerce protested noting the lack of notice and impact on customers. City Administrator Mike Strait defended the plan, saying higher fines encourage turnover and revenue, while addressing enforcement efficiency and potential new parking lease ideas for downtown employees.

Estimates Assume City Construction Near Four Million

City construction this year is projected to exceed four million dollars with estimates of 4,110,000 by Assessor Robert Harrison. Residential building dominates the total, with 108 single dwellings valued at about 2,020,000 and six multiple dwellings at 1,650,000. Commercial adds about 220,000 with A and P site and Marathon station among planned projects, while a 25 acre annexation on Austin Road is not yet counted.

Washtenaw County Equalized Value Rises by 85 Million

Washtenaw County reports an 85 412 454 increase in equalized value to 866 720 254 for 1987 led by Saline where value jumped 12 million to 27 004 300. Ford plant cited as key factor. figures await county board approval and next meeting. County seven units now at 1 equalization factor including Saline and several townships.

Council Accepts Fire Hall Bid From Ann Arbor Firm

City Council accepted a bid from Butcher & Willits of Ann Arbor to build a new fire hall for 55 457 with a four month completion. The base bid was 55 400 plus 57 for an alternate foundation change. The firm previously built the Houghton Elementary School completed last year.

Saline hosts welcome 33 foreign exchange students

Thirty three students from eleven nations stayed with Saline area families for a week of events arranged by Marjorie Quick. Activities included school panel discussions, a pot luck supper, a square dance, and tours to Belle Isle Greenfield Village and Hell Michigan. A tornado warning interrupted the Friday dance as students explored local sites and the group ended with a Mary Fox home party with a live band.
