High School PTO Elects New Officers

The High School Parent Teacher Organization elected Peter Krivsky as president at Tuesday night’s meeting. Other officers named were Raymond Mida as vice president Mrs Bart Strahley as secretary and Miss Cheryl Henes as treasurer. Next month’s meeting will feature a fashion show by the Home Economics classes.

Saline student Kathie Zeichman to study law at Notre Dame

Kathie Zeichman daughter of Mr and Mrs John Zeichman of 223 S Ann Arbor St has been accepted at Notre Dame Law School and will start in the fall term She is a Saline High School graduate and University of Michigan Regents scholar and has been an honor student in her pre law course She was also accepted by Michigan Law School

Rotary picks Ed Schinek as new club head

Ed Schinek has been elected president of the Rotary Club with Jim Ford as vice president. New officers begin duties at the first July meeting. Secretary Doug Schuur treasurer LeRoy Rutherford and board members Rev Merle Meeden Dr Joseph Mancari and outgoing president Elvin Armbruster named.

Coupon Drive Aids Kidney Machine Purchase

A statewide Jaycee Auxiliary effort collects Betty Crocker coupons to buy kidney machines through General Mills. Saline stores host canisters as organizers report a tremendous response but lengthened need from 60 000 to 600 000 coupons to complete the purchase.

Local Man Hurt In Fatal Crash

Jim Wolfinger aged 22 of 368 Mills Rd suffered minor injuries as a passenger in a weekend crash that killed the car’s driver Martin D. Hopkins of Ypsilanti who died at Beyer Memorial Hospital after the vehicle went over an embankment near Rawsonville Rd on the expressway. Also injured were John Heileran 23 of Ann Arbor Gregory Storey 18 and David Beals 18 of Ridgefield Conn. In a separate crash on West Ellsworth Rd near Wagner Rd Joann R. Roos 41 of 4870 Platt was struck by a vehicle driven by Bruce D. Harter 18 of 4660 W Ellsworth and taken to St Joseph Mercy Hospital.

Saline High School teachers wed in Texas ceremony

Miss Edna Spinks formerly taught speech and English at Saline High School and Taylor Jacobsen an art teacher were married on April 1 in Texas. The bride taught in Howell after Saline and has since lived in California.

Saline Hornets Fall to Tecumseh in season opener

Tecumseh defeated Saline 6 to 0 in the opener as Saline stranded 16 runners with bases loaded in the first four innings. Pitchers Wes Gall and Dale Bishop led a Saline squad featuring Rick Berry, Bob Charles, Dave Girbach, and Glenn Burkhardt. Clinton visits Saline Thursday and Milan comes next Tuesday on the Big Reds’ diamond.

Iroquois Annual Meet to be Here

The Portage Trails Boy Scout Council Iroquois District will hold its annual dinner and meeting at Saline High School on Wednesday April 16. Doors open 6 30 p.m. Dinner at 7. Scouters spouses and others are invited. Tickets 275 proceeds fund a Senior Scout hiking trip to Isle Royale in July. Tickets available from unit leaders Elmer Bishop or the Boy Scout office in Ann Arbor until Monday noon.

Former Saline Man Killed in Viet Nam

A former Saline High School student Frank Keck died in Viet Nam on April 1 after joining the Army in 1968. Funeral services were held in Kalkaska. he leaves wife Janet and son Frank Ross, plus his mother and brother Wally. Memorials to a fund for the widow and infant son were requested.

Clerk Resigns and Lodi Planning Roster Fills

The Lodi township annual meeting completed the planning commission roster with Alwin Wild named to the group, replacing Wild on the board of appeals by Walter Lindemann. Rudolph Gross will resign as township clerk once a replacement is appointed. The board set a 28 588.95 budget for the coming year with 15 percent raises for supervisor treasurer and clerk and increases for trustees.

Two Injured In Tennessee Collision At US 12 Corner

Two men were hurt in a Friday noon crash at the US 12 and S State Rd intersection. Joseph A. Lopez 26 of 204 S Wagner Rd and Lawrence S Edwards of 6564 E Michigan Ave were treated at St Joseph Mercy Hospital. Edwards was ticketed for failure to yield and improper turn.

Sgt Neil Dechert Wounded in Viet Nam Expects Discharge

Neil E Dechert son of Mr and Mrs Harold Dechert of Allen Park was seriously wounded in Viet Nam March 19 while serving as a medic. After about two years in the Army and service in Viet Nam since September he is being treated at Chelsea Naval Hospital in Boston and expects discharge in roughly two weeks.

Strait Wins Bronze Star In Viet Nam

Sgt. James Strait son of Mr. and Mrs. Elwin Strait of N. Lewis Street has been awarded the Bronze Star for actions in Viet Nam. He has been in Viet Nam since March 20, 1968 and expects to start home in about two weeks. He plans to return to Michigan State University in the fall to resume studies in architecture.

City Budget Sees Conservative 1969-70 Plan

City Council reviews a minimal 1969-70 budget with a major new item of 20 000 for Sa line River dam repairs and run off pipes. Library and recreation funds stay near last year, with scheduled public inspection, hearing, and adoption deadlines in May and June.

Saline School Choirs to Stage Tuesday Festival

A choir festival by Saline school vocal groups will be held at 7 30 p m Tuesday in the High School gym. Directors are Morris Risenhoover Lois DeRosa and Doris Kraushaar. Each choir will perform songs some with xylophone metallophone and recorders. The program closes with combined elementary choirs.

Special Quarterly Trash Pick-Up Set

A special quarterly trash pick-up is scheduled in the city on April 21 and 22 on the north side of Michigan Ave and on April 24 and 25 on the south side. All trash that fits the city packet will be collected with a maximum length of 514 feet. Trash must be placed at the curb by 7 a.m.

Liston Wins Hopwood Award at University of Michigan

Kalian Liston of Saline won $500 for his story A Brother for Jeremy in the Avery and Jules Hopwood Contest at Michigan. He is a psychology major and Saline High School graduate. 24 students won awards across fiction drama poetry and essays.

Fair Board to Meet Next Monday in Saline High School

Saline Community Fair Board will convene at 8 30 in the agriculture room of Saline High School on Monday. Members will review fair plans and schedule meetings.
