The Carl and Micki Weller explore starting a Farmers Market in Saline at the Sauk Trail Inn after remodeling. They anticipate enough customer flow from US 12 weekends and seek 10 suppliers of produce eggs baked goods and cider to launch. Interested growers are asked to call 429-2115.
Plans underway for the Houghton School carnival to raise funds for equipment. The event runs Friday May 2 from 6 to 9 pm with Mrs. Eugene W. Hines as general chairman and a team handling tickets prizes publicity and cafeteria duties.
Petitions to run for two four year school board seats are available at the High School Superintendent's office. Election is June 9 with May 12 at 4 p.m. as filing deadline. Voter registration ends May 9 at 5 p.m. Absentee ballots may be obtained beginning 75 days before the election and through 2 p.m. June 7. or until 4 p.m. on election day for disabled or late absence.
The restaurant concession for the 1969 Saline Fair was awarded to Saline chapter 311 CFS at the fair board meeting held at the high school. Albert Gall reported on the March 28 Michigan Fair Association meeting in Lansing.
Two youths were injured Sunday afternoon in a go cart collision in the Saline High School parking lot. Dennis Peck 19 of 4909 Saline Ann Arbor Rd underwent skull fracture surgery at St Joseph Mercy Hospital and is reported doing well. John Lake 20 of 315 N Ann Arbor St suffered bruises. Police said the go carts moving in opposite directions collided on the lot. Peck is a Saline High School graduate and works at R and B Machine Tool Co.
Saline VFW post will hold a free bicycle registration program Saturday May 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fire Hall at E Michigan and Harris streets. Police note the optional registration aids return if bikes are stolen or lost. tags are reflectorized for safety.
Robert Howard Cubberly, 29, a Tecumseh native employed in the Saline Vescio Market meat department, was killed instantly in a head on crash on US 12 three miles east of Clinton at 7 40 a m while en route to work. Jack Bernard Federman, 52, of Southfield, injured, was hospitalized and later released. Cubberly leaves a spouse and two children. this is the third Saline Vescio employee killed in a motor vehicle accident in 34 years.
Citizens for Social Justice meet at 8 pm Monday at the Saline Junior High School to discuss Black history books supplements and teaching aids. Howard McCann will lead the session with public invited and Saline teachers urged to attend.
Members of the Methodist Youth Fellowship will bake bread and rolls by order on Saturday and deliver to customers. Orders may be placed by calling Mrs. Frank Teachout at 429-4277.
Mayor Hugh Reveling's weekly message to Saline residents covers pond restoration progress and a potential simple temporary solution. He notes preparing an all-time burn ordinance, outlines garbage and trash pickup dates for April 21 22 and 24 25 with limits on items, and urges disposal through dealers or charities for large items. The city restricts the dump area to concrete, stones and dirt and seeks edge-area cooperation.
Saline’s remodeled Schleh building on S Ann Arbor Street nears completion with volunteers and local groups supplying lighting, flooring, and shelving. If all goes to plan moving day is Saturday April 26, the last day of Library Week, as the library gains about twice its current space but still needs furniture and funds for final touches.
The Schools' Advisory Council will ask the Board of Education to review the present and future state of the proposed nature study area on the High School property off Maple Rd. The facilities committee, led by Dr. Wilbur Vander Yacht, reported on fills by contractors and had recommended keeping the 11 acre area natural for study. A by law change proposal, favoring population based representation, was tabled.
