The 22nd Saline Community Fair drew large crowds despite rain early. Friday saw about 4000 attend the Miss Saline crowning, while Saturday featured the big parade with floats awarded to American Legion, FL AL, Lamb Club, ERA, American Legion Auxiliary, and Rotary Club.
Saline fire emergency early January saw Troopers Howard Hayes and Wid A Leik from the Basilanti post receive exemplary Service citations for guiding sleeping residents from smoke filled apartments at the corner of Michigan Ave and Ann Arbor Street.
Ella Everett, formerly of 3183 North Ann Arbor Street Saline, visits Mrs. Murray Saunders and family at 9701 Warner Road. She arrived May 31 after five years in Belgian Congo missionary work, where she supervised nurses at a sixty bed hospital and taught locally. She trained as a nurse in Ann Arbor, studied at Northern Baptist Seminary, and will train at Johns Hopkins and a New York hospital before returning to the Congo in September 1958.
The Varsity Laundry at 300 S Fifth Ave Ann Arbor will begin a Saline delivery route picking up any amount or kind and accepting collect calls. The driver visits Saline on Tuesdays and Fridays and pricing details are in the Saline Observer. Temperatures forecast near 2 degrees below normal with a warming trend and showers possible later in the week.
Four young Army reservists from Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County begin basic training at Fort Wood. Pvt. Charles A. Lindemann of Saline and PFC Emil M. Deister answer questions for the group as they enter eight weeks of basic training then move to Army schools. Quinsey Gould and Valentine, all Ann Arbor area graduates, plan to resume education after their active duty.
The Saline Community Fair hosted a baby contest on Thursday sponsored by the Child Study Club. Participants ranged from six months to six years with winners named across first second and third place divisions as well as a twin division featuring Jean and Jean Burkhart.
The Girls and Boys community fair awarded prizes in pet displays and decorated bicycles and floats on Saturday. Winners include Ronald Alber for best shetland pony, Jer ry Feeman and Barbara Dieterle for dog categories, John Cats for best trained dog, Anita Larsen for best cat, Nancy Diable for sheep, and multiple winners in floats, bikes, dolls, and costumes with top honors to Sharon Sackett and Anita Larsen among others.
Patricia Teachout won the Miss Saline crown at the Saline Community Fair with about 4 000 attendees. Patricia Visel and Patricia McDougal were runners up as the pageant highlighted local students from Saline High School and nearby towns.
The Saline Community Fair opened with a home talent show for youths up to 13. In the under 11 group Judy Feldkamp and David Farrell won tap dance first, Bobby Austin piano second, Jan Austin piano third, with Cathy among top finishers.
In the 11 to 13 year group Carl Ol Meyers won with a vocal selection while Jane Ross took second in tap dance Jody Jordan placed third for vocal Karen Ernst finished fourth in acrobatic dance Carol Guenther and Margaret Bihlmeyer earned fifth for a piano and clarinet duet Barbara Schmid, Sarah Schaible, Lydia Robison, Susan Anthony, and Karen Kempf performed pantomime to place sixth May Hawks of Detroit served as the program's bouncer for the event.
