Fire damages Townsend repair garage near Austin Road

A fire of undetermined origin gutted the interior of a repair garage at Leo Townsend's home on 4340 Austin Rd shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday. Towns end escaped with a portable arc welding machine. four rabbits were rescued as Saline fire crews fought the blaze and ruled defective wiring the probable cause. damages and coverage are being assessed.

Old West Stage Coach Visits Saline From Ohio Hobbyist

Dwight M. Wellman of Defiance Ohio, a restaurant owner, travels home from Flint after a Post Office groundbreaking parade with a three quarters inch scale stage coach on a trailer. The coach is drawn by four midget ponies, piloted by Wellman’s son Jan, outrider at thirty three inches tall, as part of Wellman’s old fashioned conveyance collection.

Car Crash Kills and Injures East Alton Couple

Robert W. Cooper and his wife Wilma were injured when their car went out of control on US-112 east of Fosdock Road in Pittsfield township. The vehicle crashed through guardrails on an overhead bridge, fell over an embankment, and both occupants were thrown from the car. Cooper suffered a fractured leg and back injury. his wife fractured pelvis with internal injuries and multiple lacerations.

Marty Installs Ceramic Broiler At His Restaurant

Marty Hemenway installed a gas fired ceramic broiler at 109 EB Michigan Ave in his restaurant. Measuring 34 by 28 inches it is the first of its kind in the area and can broil about 20 steaks every six minutes.

Honor Roll of senior and junior high students for the first six weeks of the fall term was announced by Supt. Leo Jensen. The list includes many names across grades eight through twelve with numerous students from local schools and families noted.

Detroit Junior Livestock Show at state fairgrounds

The Detroit Junior Livestock Show will be held at the state fairgrounds from December 9 to 11. Four H Club members from across the state compete for blue ribbons and cash prizes, with hundreds of youths entering animals in 1957.

Children at Saline Elementary School prepare pumpkins for a Friday morning contest. Carved pumpkins must be in rooms by 9 o clock with four per room advancing to final judging in the gym. Prizes award one dollar for original design and seventy five cents for funniest pumpkin.

The Saline Chamber of Commerce will hold a special 8 p.m. meeting Tuesday November 4 at the Saline Sayings Bank. Secretary Leon Vedder urged all members to attend to discuss the special merchants Christmas program. The prior Monday turnout was light.

Dental Fluoride Clinic Offers School Children Treatments

The Dental Health Committee of the Room Mothers' Association launches a fifth clinic during November in school hours for Sodium Fluoride applications. Eligible are Kindergarten, Second, Fifth, and Eighth graders, with others admitted on parent request. Four applications reduce cavities by about 40 percent but do not prevent existing decay. The program charges $3.00 per child for the full series.

Hansen Printing to Launch Ypsilanti Times Semi-Weekly

Hansen Printing Corp of Whittaker Michigan will publish a new semi weekly newspaper named the Ypsilanti Times. The paper debuts Friday October 31 with a Tuesday and Friday schedule and a 10006 circulation to cover every Ypsilanti home. The Times is printed in the Saline union print shop. Previously the Ypsilanti Press faced a strike by publisher Frank Handy. The publisher also runs The Saline Observer The Manchester Enterprise The Milan Leader and The Advertiser.

Local Youths Join Brigade Week Celebration at York Baptist

Youth groups from the Christian Service Brigade Battalion 664 and the Stockaders of York Baptist Church plan National Brigade Week events starting November 29. Members will be recognized during a Sunday service on November 2 and an open house on Friday at 7:00 PM. The 1958 59 charter and new member cards will be issued, with several awards announced.

Halloween Dance Set For Oct 31 Night

A Halloween Dance for junior and senior high students will follow the Friday football game on Oct 31 in the Elementary School. MC will be Brian Conley The Smiling Irishman from WOTIA. Saline Kiwanis Club to hold its annual officer election during the regular meeting at Martys Restaurant next Monday night November 3. Guest speaker Zoltan Kato of Motorola Communications and Engineering Co Detroit could not attend. Attendance reported at 99 percent.

Sidewalk Special Assessment Plan Approved

A special assessment will fund a 14 foot reinforced sidewalk along the south side of W Michigan Ave from Lot 71 to Lot 65 in Assessor's Plat No 6. The $2800 cost will be borne by benefitting lots and premises. The assessment roll has been prepared and the City Council will hear complaints at 8 p.m. in the City Building.

The Saline Methodist Church will hold Sunday school from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. due to the illness of Rev. Robert Richards. He is hospitalized at University Hospital in Ann Arbor.

Stolen Parking Meter Recovered on Farm Near Saline

Henry Aflen of 6900 Platt Rd reported finding a parking meter valued at 100 dollars on his township farm near a wooded area. The meter had been forced open and its contents stolen.
