Goodwill Industries will collect household items including clothing shoes hats toys and most furniture in Saline on Thursday November 13. Call local representative Mrs Vern Arhart at Saline HA 9 7019 to arrange a pickup.
A crew began tearing out the old curb on the south side of W Michigan Ave from S Ann St to prepare for a new curb at sidewalk level. The project runs 150 feet to the alley, with Lewis and Frisinger of Ann Arbor as contractors.
Parents must bring consent cards and pay by Friday November 7 to enroll children in sodium fluoride treatments. Treatments start November A notice was released by the school health office.
La Vine Community Hospital Board met Tuesday evening at Universal Die Casting Co. It approved calling delinquent donors to secure funds for the nearing completion and impending opening of the new hospital. Memorial plaques require prompt pledges. plastering is finished and an opening date will be announced soon.
Police Chief Earl Kirby said Saline experienced not too much damage on Halloween with a few broken windows scattered papers and a tipped refreshment stand at the high school field. A lost child was returned to parents and a neighbor reported a cut garden hose. officials noted this was not by younger children.
About 50 Saline F H A members will attend the Region 3 Future Homemakers of America meeting at Roosevelt High School in Ypsilanti on Saturday November 8 leaving Saline High School at 8 30 am with adviser Mrs Washburn and Mrs Mehler. Saline chapter leads the event planning with a red and white Futurama cover and a rocket name tag entry. Janice Harwood is the Saline F H A candidate for a regional office with campaign manager Rachel Wood. Delegates Sandra Merritt and Mrs Mary Ross attend as young delegates. An original dance of the future and a skit The Mortgage on the Cow will be presented followed by a tour of the Eastern Michigan Homemaking Department.
Wilson Scott heads Saline Area Community Chest drive as funds rise toward 7931 with 2226.25 collected. A Pontiac donor sends 31 to Saline, while locals praise youth programs, Red Cross Blood Bank, Scouting, library activities, and United Fund contributions aiding 33 agencies.
Twenty three moose sightings have been reported this year, all in the eastern upper peninsula, contrasting with five sightings in 1957. Biologists speculate moose migrate from Ontario likely crossing ice in winter, drawn by ample forest foods and waters. They are protected from hunting.

Carol Wright and Dick Hoeft won first prize at the JSHS Halloween Dance held Friday night in the Pugh School gym. Sara Schiable and Bill Starling won junior high partners first. Laura Belleau and Kyle Cruse took second. First prize cash was 3 and second 2. Costume winners included Karen Liedhieser Joanne Wie bush Janice Nielsen Benna Sawyer Judy Hunt and Pam Schmid. The Rev Stephen T Fenton of Michigan will preach at the Federated Presbyterian and Baptist churches Sunday at 11:00 am. Formerly pastor of local congregations, Dunk now serves as assistant and will be hosted by Mr and Mrs Norman Guenther.
Lauren Wild was elected president of the Saline Kiwanis Club at the regular weekly meeting in Marty's Restaurant on Monday evening. Hugh Keveling named vice president and Howard Hill re elected secretary treasurer. Directors elected to the board were Marty Hemenway Don Leidheiser Alton Ealy Wilson Scott Frank Campbell Douglas Milhan and Tony Schild. Adair named program chairman for next Monday night's meeting.
State Police officers will be equipped with .30 cal M 1 folding carbines to boost effectiveness in vehicle pursuits. A year after a fatal gunfight in Clinton Michigan and an Indiana incident, traditional revolvers failed to pierce suspect cars. About 500 carbines will be issued with training to begin soon, highlighting maneuverability and quicker shoulder shooting for blockades and police work.
About 52 children competed in the Saline Elementary School annual Pumpkin Carving Contest. Prizes of 1 dollar and 75 cents were awarded for original and funny designs, with winners named across grades from kindergarten to sixth. The event was sponsored by the Saline Child Study Club with community support.
The Washtenaw County 4 H Fall Achievement awards list names winners across many categories. Saline leads with Duane Rogers, Neil Haarer, Clarke Gordon, and others earning trophies and honors in dairy beef sheep swine horse and leadership. Additional winners include Pauline Buss Manchester Peter Spike Milan Susan Gleason Whitmore Lake and Lynn Gates Saline among many others.
Saline Elementary School Room Mothers plan a Toy Party for Christmas gifts. The event, chaired by Mrs. Roland Sutton, will be held at 8 p m on Monday, November 10, with displays by Mrs. William Spike and books from Slater's Book Store. Toys and books ordered will be delivered at the next meeting on Monday, December 8.
The department introduces a new semiautomatic rifle capable of 600 yards, exceeding the regulation rifle’s range and surpassing the distance achievable by higher powered rifles currently in use by the State Police.
State Conservation Department officials remind hunters that one deer per hunter per year is the legal limit regardless of season. A deer taken in archery means no further deer hunting in firearm seasons. Even permits for any deer during special seasons allow only one deer per hunter.

Farmers will vote November 25 on a new corn and feed program. The plan provides government supports for all corn at a lower level than current restrictions. If adopted, it replaces decades old price aid with a new concept, amid bumper crops and higher overall grain production.
