John Williams resigns from Saline High School where he taught social studies and driver education due to poor health. Robert De Bruyn is hired as a temporary substitute and no permanent plan is yet decided. The piece closes with a quotation about ambition and a note on U.S. home gardens.
Ernest Girbach of 26938 Arkona Road Saline has been elected a director of the Michigan Milk Producers Association. The election occurred Thursday November 4 at the Fairchild Theater East Lansing Michigan State Normal College. He is the second Washtenaw County director elected and will attend the National Association meeting in Washington with his wife.
Saline Child Study Club meets at 417 North Ann Arbor Street on Tuesday November 16 at 8 06. The program features a film and discussion on Muscular Dystrophy with speaker Mrs Raymond McCausey. Refreshments served by hostess Mrs Harold Wrey with help from Mrs Delores Bosmer and Mrs Fred Korte.
Thomas M. Shurtz of 102 E Henry St Saline died Friday afternoon after a long illness. He was 81 born June 39 1868 in Lenawee County. He married Florence Beasley January 12 1897 in Adrian. Survived by wife, a daughter Mrs Harold Halsey of Tampa a son Donald of La Crescenta a brother Henry of Manchester 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He owned Manchester Handle and Turning Co in Saline until 1944. Funeral Monday 2 pm at Lockwood Funeral Home with Rev R R Feuell. Burial Brookside Cemetery Tecumseh.
Birth anniversaries listed for November include Mrs. Robert Wilson Clayton on the 14th, followed by Mike Sheehan and Betty Dicks on the 16th, and Jean Osterhout on the 18th.
Mrs Arthur Jacobsen will host the Women’s Class at Federated Church on Friday evening November 19 at 8:00. Vice-president Mrs John Dicks will preside the business session and Mrs Hazen Jewell will present a program with colored slides of recent church functions and family pictures of class members.
The Saline F.F.L.A. teams up with Buckeye Donkey Ball Co for an 8:00 p.m. event at the local gym. Two five minute quarters play on mangeled donkeys with de odorized shoes as Rotary Club captained by Alvin Gross faces an F.F.A. squad led by Richard Neithammer.
On November 3 1954 at 8 p m the Saline F H A Chapter initiated 24 new members. Officers for the year are President Donna Wahl Vice President Nan Young Treasurer Carol Burmeister Secretary Shirley Uphaus. Guides included Sally Cook Janet Luckhardt Florien Wild Rosemarie Hrickson Wanda Boehm Mary Meister Marlene Hiseman Ruth Sanderson. A tea followed with roses from Mrs Curtis and cake baked by Mrs Pearl Wild.
A proposal to hire a county engineer was defeated 24 to 6 at the County Board of Supervisors monthly meeting. The appointment of Alvin Sims from the department of tax descriptions and records was reaffirmed, after Sims’ re-appointment had been held up pending a study.
A 1950 Ford owned by Ralph Smith of Shady-Side Trailer Park Ypsilanti was stolen from A M Chevrolet garage on November 3 and recovered November 8 in New Orleans. Two 17 year olds are held in New Orleans in connection with the theft. Saline police recovered a stolen car with a flat tire parked in front of Gable Brothers store the same day. The abandoned car belonged to a Dearborn resident and was returned the same day. FBI now taking over jurisdiction. Also, county engineer proposal defeated.
Arthur Nissley president of Michigan Ladder Co in Ypsilanti and Saline native from a banking and business family is appointed to fill the vacancy on Saline Savings Bank board caused by Mrs. William Crim’s death. His career spans banking bonds scouting and civic roles. The article notes a favorable bid by Stranahan Harris Co and Paine Webber for sewerage bonds.
