Four Saline Kiwanis members attended the Ann Arbor Eastern Kiwanis Club meeting last night. Attendance for October was reported at 100 percent. Hugh Reveling will chair next week's program on the club’s first year history. A Jess Morley film on a Canadian big game hunt will be shown at the Monday meeting. A Kino sponsored movie at the High School Saturday features 23 Paces to Baker Street and Disney short Don Donald. Attendance at weekly movies is strong but more adults are hoped for.

Michigan State University crop researchers say the chemical 2 4 D remains the most economical method for controlling weeds in corn as a pre emergency spray.

State Conservation Dept Sees Record Deer Season Ahead
Michigan officials forecast one of the largest deer seasons in history. The State Conservation Dept will run deer checking stations across the state to estimate kill sizes and gather biological data. Saline American Legion Hall will host a sauerkraut dinner on December 4 served by the Ladies Auxiliary starting at 5 30 p m. A Christmas dance with Kenny Volz orchestra follows on December 13. Legion posts include about 140 paid members with potential growth to 250 300 in the Saline area.

Giant Gobbler Search At Michigan Turkey Festival
The Michigan Turkey Growers Association hosts the Michigan Turkey Festival at Lansing Civic Center December 2 to 4. The king size gobbler will be presented to Gov. G. Mennen Williams, with the next largest going to State Director of Agriculture George McIntyre. The event features live and dressed turkey shows, premiums, and a program on industry issues with national speakers. A banquet and auction close the festival on December 4.

Luck Of Draw For Deer Permits Narrowed To Random Selection
The State Conservation Dept. announced that the draw will decide who among 129 276 applicants for any deer permits in the 37 special areas will obtain 55 601 permits. Across most areas applications exceeded quotas by as much as nine to one, leaving many hopefuls to try again in future years.

Explorer Scout Meeting Set for Tomorrow

Fire damages Lodi home. man injured in blaze
Firefighters battled a blaze at Edward J. Dieterle’s residence on Ellsworth Road in Lodi township causing an estimated 5 000 to 6 000 dollars in damage. Dieterle, treated for burns on nose and ears, was taken to University Hospital and later released. The fire largely affected the front of the house, porch, living rooms, and roof. Authorities cite a defective TV set or a cigarette igniting a rug as possible causes. Dieterle, a widower sleeping alone, was led to safety by firefighters. his son remains hospitalized after a prior car crash.

FFA Grow DeKalb Corn in Saline High School Project
Eleven boys of the Saline EF A through the High School vocational agriculture program are growing two acres of De Kalb corn. Alton Ealy, instructor and FFA advisor, says one acre of each variety will be evaluated by a De Kalb representative. Top two growers will enter the State Corn Growing contest and attend a fall banquet. Fifteen acres of wheat were planted on the new High School property on Maple Rd for fertilizer demonstrations.

MSU to Hold Farm Home Training Short Course
Michigan State University will host an Advanced Farm and Home Training course from December 3 to February 25. The program, led by MSU faculty, targets young farmers and their spouses with farm management, homemaking, and gardening topics. The course cost is $21 for ten lunch sessions.

MSU dairy nutrition expert C. F. Huffman says only top quality hay justifies pelleting costs. On digestible nutrients, $20 ton hay equals $40 ton corn. adding $4 to $5 pelleting makes ordinary hay uneconomical. Pelleted hay shows potential but requires better hay quality and cheaper equipment.

Saline Troop Plans 8-Foot Camp Trailer and Court of Honor
Saline Boy Scout Troop No. 46 builds an eight foot trailer with help from committee members and the Saline High School Award Trip Organization. Principal Elmer Houghton donated the trailer frame and Dwight Reynolds provided the hitch. Court of Honor set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday December 9 at the Elementary School to advance Scouts a grade. An overnight campout at Saline Valley Farms is planned for December 13 or 20 with details to follow.

State Police Auction Nets About $2500
The annual State Police auction of stolen and recovered property raised about 2500 in net proceeds after costs and commissions. The two day sale offered 460 lots including 50 bicycles and numerous items from estates of deceased state inmates. Legislation enacted in 1957 directs the annual disposal of such items by auction.

Community Chest Drive Seeks Higher Local Gifts
The Saline area Community Chest Drive reports $2925 raised to date with more than half of volunteers unreported. Treasurer Miss Luella Lambarth says gifts and solicitations are hoped to raise the total, as Wilson Scott again leads the drive toward a $7951 goal. Twenty five percent will stay locally this year, more than previous years, with up to $1931 remaining for community needs before other budgets are allocated.

Former Saline Man Named To Pewter Guild Post
Paul E. Davis a former Saline resident has been named secretary treasurer of the American Pewter Guild. He lived at 117 Maple Ave in Saline. A 1941 Saline High School graduate he served in the Air Force then studied at Michigan State Normal College and the University of Michigan earning a master s degree in 1950. He worked briefly at Universal Die Casting Corp before becoming development engineer with the Research Institute in Columbus Ohio. He is a charter member of the American Pewter Guild.
